STS-120 Viewing
« on: 08/13/2007 08:17 pm »
I am going to be in Florida for my honeymoon from Oct 22-31st.  I would like to get some causeway passes (unless anyone can get a newly married couple some premium spots) for watching the launch.  Does anyone know when the tickets for STS-120 are going to be for sale?  And since I've read they sell out very fast, any ideas on the best way of getting them?  This will be my first (non-Estes or water based) rocket launch.  Thanks.

Try the KSC visitor complex website.  I have booked a 3 week hoilday to see this launch which will be my first ever rocket launch live.  ;)

Launch viewing tickets appear to go on sale on 10th September.  They say that they ship them out 3 weeks before the launch, how long will they take to arrive in the UK?  I am a little concerned that they may not arrive before I fly out to the USA.

The pads are visible from Titusville. I'd almost recommend staying in a hotel in Titusville (that way you have internet access) over watching from the causeway-no after launch traffic either.

There is a huge difference IMO , if you are on the 405 NASA Causeway it is alot better view than Titusville . If someone could slide into getting them into the turn basin .......... WOW , that's the view .

Only way that happens is if someone gets a turn basin pass and takes them both in . Turn basin passes only allow 3 people total (or did last time I saw info on them) .

The person who brought them in would be responsible for their actions , though they may be fine , trusting someone from over the web is hard to do :)

*Infomercial* :)

And for those looking to get a hotel in the area, or want to sort a flight for the trip over, why not speak to a travel company run by an actual Shuttle follower (Larry S) from this site!

A hotel in Titusville may be great, but I'd reccomend going along the water.  Well, obviously causeway would be the best, but if you can't get to the causeway, Titusville is a great spot too.

I was down there for STS-118 and we just pulled into a spot along the Indian River.  They charged $10 to park.  It was a place called Paul's Smokehouse.  They had a ton of shore on the river...and an air-condtioned restaurant showing NASA TV before the launch.

We were lucky enough to have the internet there too...we had a laptop with a Verizon aircard.  I couldn't lock onto any wifi signals though.

There was also an AM radio station...1240 I think...that put the commentary of NASA TV through and didn't babble over it.

Anyway, I'd take the causeway any day, but we didn't end up getting passes, so Titusville did well.  Here's a picture of the view from where we were.  It's zoomed a bit but it was only a snap-and-shoot digital camera.  Through image stabilizing binoculars it was spectacular.

Having seen quite a few shuttle launches over the years, I must say that Titusville does offer a great view. It's one of the few locations where you can capture both the shuttle launch and VAB in the same frame.

If you're looking for a great view where you don't have to pay anything for parking or passes and that has NASA TV radio broadcasts then you're going to want to go to the 402 causeway (aka Garden Street) located just north of KSC. This viewing place has an unobstructed view of the VAB and launch pads and provides a great view of all launches as the shuttle will head north (thus passing directly in front of you) as it launches. Also, at this viewing area you don't have to worry about the shuttle's exhaust trail obscurring it from view. It doesn't happen here!

It said "available" at first, then after I entered my credit card number and gave all that info, it said sold out. Oh well. I'm not even sure I will need the ticket but wanted to have it as an option. I figure if I don't make the trip, or make other viewing arrangements, I could give it away. (If they are transferable.) If I can't get a caueway pass from my senator's office maybe I will have to watch from Titusville. The view looks good but I will miss being able to hear the noise from the vehicle within the first half minute or so after liftoff.

Same here, had the tickets, hit the finalize button and they were gone...9:03.  Couldn't get through on the phone either.  I made reservations with grayline.  It will be  a bit eaiser for us since we don't need to figure out the rental car (Silver lining).

Does anyone know if you can purchase tickets to the vistor's center AFTER the launch?  The website states that the tickets aren't good for the day of launch.  I've tried calling to get an answer and can't get through...?

Only launch ticket holders can get to the Visitors Center on a launch day.  Regular Visitors Center tickets are good on almost any other day.

I currently have reserved a room at the Clarion Hotel in Titusville (I believe that it used to be the Holiday Inn).  Would it be worth simply staying on the hotel property to see the launch or to go to another viewing area to get a better view?

Thanks,

Ray.

I stayed at that Clarion when it used to be a Holiday Inn in 1989 for STS 28, which was a DOD mission. The view was good but it was so hazy at ground level you could not see the shuttle on the pad, or anything else at KSC from there, unfortunately. When the vehicle was high enough to see it was a good clear view but I don't think you could hear the sound until about T+90 seconds. So that was a bit of a letdown.

I think your view from there is fine but I am also curious to hear about other spots in Titusville. This Parrish Park on the 402 (?) causeway is intrigueing. I wonder if you might be a closer to the launch pads from there. But I wonder at what point that road is closed off since it looks like it leads directly to the north part of KSC.

I don't know where the road is actually closed for launch day, but the road itself is a great place to view a launch. I'm go there often for launches and it's about 10miles from the launch pad. PM me if you guys want more info. on this spot.

The road (Garden Street leading to the Max Brewer bridge) is 406 not 402. It is closed beginning on the east side of the bridge beginning at L-3 days. For pad A the closest here is about 11.5 miles (about 10 miles for B). You can measure in Google Earth.

What about north of KSC?? That beach north of the pads - is there any way to get as close as they let you on that side - be an interesting perspective for sure..

You can go down that beach as close as 12 miles, but not with a vehicle...you have to walk or bike maybe, by entering up at New Smyrna where CC Nat'l Seashore begins. This is the view from about 15-20 miles using a zoom lens and on a very clear day:

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1084938/M/

You can get to the same distance by driving down S.R. 3 from the north, to the Halouver canal. I have seen just one photo to date from here. They are different, but offer no advantage over Titusville in my opinion (though they will be less crowded for sure). Here is a photo from the canal (note his caption is incorrect about the distance):

I, too, was lucky and managed to get some LTT tickets. I had to purchase the "have breakfast with an astronaut option", but at least I got them ;) The breakfast is at 5:30a, which for sure will bring me one of the earliest scheduled arrival times, I guess 5a at the first launch attempt. But that's the smallest issue, giving the fact I am flying over from Germany with my family just to view the launch. I even have managed to convince my son's school that he must have some extra days off for the event.

It's my first launch, and will probably be my only shuttle launch ever. So I would like to make it the greatest possible experience and have a few questions. I know that there is no definite answer to them, but I would appreciate a few rules of thumb from the experienced folks over here.

The number one question is how many days does it *usually* take to actually launch? From what I have seen, I'd say there is a 80% chance of a successful launch attempt within the first 7 calendar days. Is this right?

How common is it that the launch is scrubbed in the last 4 hours? I am asking because I have read the my LTT is used up as soon as I board the bus (actually when I hand it over, so even earlier).

Assuming that I have bad luck and the launch is scrubbed after I used my tickets - do you know how new ones can be obtained? Especially, is there a specific trick in getting hold of them? I tried to visit last summer's Atlantis launch and had to travel back a day or so before it actually launched :( I did not see any LTTs popping up during that time, even though a lot of people had to leave early. But I remember there was no last-minute scrub at that time.

I know that from a consumables point of view, there cannot be a launch attempt every day. I think I have heard that there can be at most 2 (or 3?) consecutive launch attempts, then a day is needed for stocking up consumables. Is this right? If so, what are the actual numbers (consecutive attempts, days to re-fill consumables).

Has anyone experience in how long it takes to drive in from Orlando? I may have been too late to secure a hotel room close to the area (working on that ;)). So I may be forced to drive from Orlando, maybe from the airport area.

Does anybody know if there is a problem if I drive to the visitor center's parking lot with a car full of luggage? I assume the screening happens at the "normal" KSCVC entry point after the ticket booth (and restrictions apply from there).

Do I need to allocate extra travel time when I drive in via SR-3 (I have the feeling that it can get much more crowded, but there is no substance for that feeling...)?

Agreed, I've a lot of questions ;) I would deeply appreciate any answers, the full set isn't necessary. Again, I know space flight is complex and risky and there are now definite answers to many of my questions. I would just be interested in what you think is common - knowing that this time things may be considerably different (as last year with Atlantis...). And, of course, all other tips are also deeply appreciated. I hope for a great and safe launch!

Rainer

Rainer:
I'll share my experience on shuttle launches -vs- scrubs.
I live in the New York area which is approximately 1100 miles from the Kennedy Space Center.
Being the huge space fan that I am, my family and I scheduled our (usually 1 week) vacations around a shuttle launch quite a few times...Yes I have a great family!!
Between STS-3 in 1982 and STS-118 last month, we were there for 14 shuttle launch attempts.
Out of those 14, we were fortunate enough to see 11 launches. There are so many factors in a system as complicated as the space shuttle...not to mention weather conditions around the world. The 3 scrubs I witnessed were at T-6 hours, T-9 minutes, and T-5 minutes.
If you look at a step by step countdown from T- 6 hours to T-0, and factor in every part that must work, it truly is amazing that there aren't more scrubs!
Experiencing a scrub is very disappointing as you can imagine, but experiencing a launch is something that you'll never forget!
Go with an open mind, don't worry about what can happen, and enjoy the experience of a lifetime...Good Luck!!

Hi TJL,

thanks for the reply and the info. That looks promising. I definitely have an open mind and I can stay for the full launch window until Nov, 13th as an "emergency action" ;) I remember my disappointments on the STS-115 launch attempts (I guess that was the worst mission ever in that regard?). I hope all goes well and we'll see an excellent launch on the first attempts.

Does anybody else have some info on the remaining questions? Especially the one with getting new LTTs is quite interesting to me ;)

Thanks,
Rainer

I was notified by my Congressman's Office on Friday that I had been selected/approved by NASA to receive VIP Tickets.  I was told that I won't receive anything in the mail until next week.

Does anyone know where the folks with VIP tickets will view the launch from?

Thanks,

It used be to be an easy answer, the Banana Creek VIP viewing site at the Saturn V Center. This was the VIP site for everyone until Return to Flight.

Now, they have been sending many VIPs to the causeway (though separated from the public ticket holders). They decided to limit the number of viewers at Banana Creek starting with 114.

If it is Banana Creek you will be at 3.9 miles; the causeway, 6.5 to 7.5 depending on where on the causeway.

I contacted my Congressman's office about two months ago and requested VIP tickets.  They in turn sent a request to NASA, who has the ultimate approval.  I was notified last Friday that I was 'approved' by NASA.

An hour later I called back for tickets & they were sold out. If you would like to sell your lunch tickets, I'm buying!!

I just received my visitor center passes & information. In bold letters it states items NOT permitted at the visitor complex.
Aside of guns, knives etc.. it says no "backpacks, coolers, luggage or other small bags".
See you there!

Normally it's fine to go to the parking lot with those items, you just have to go through security/metal detectors as a person to actually enter the visitors' center without those items.

Has anyone experience in how long it takes to drive in from Orlando? I may have been too late to secure a hotel room close to the area (working on that ;)). So I may be forced to drive from Orlando, maybe from the airport area.

Rainer

It’s about an hour drive from the Orlando Airport. There are plenty of hotels in the area Coca Beach is nice it’s 20 minuets to get to the Visitors Center. Coco has Ron John Surf Shop and other attractions for your family.

Quote

Does anybody know if there is a problem if I drive to the visitor center's parking lot with a car full of luggage? I assume the screening happens at the "normal" KSCVC entry point after the ticket booth (and restrictions apply from there).

Rainer

That will not be a problem. From my understand parking for Causeway Viewing is at the Visitors Center. You will proceed into the center a buses will take to the Causeway Just remember backpacks an coolers are not allowed but purses, waist packs and diaper bags are. And will be searched.

Quote

Do I need to allocate extra travel time when I drive in via SR-3 (I have the feeling that it can get much more crowded, but there is no substance for that feeling...)?

Rainer

Defiantly allow yourself plenty of time on launch day.

Rainer –

You should have a great time. Allow yourself at least one day other than launch day to check out the Visitors Center. Other than the historical and display exhibits, there are kid shows and they just built a thrill ride that simulates a shuttle launch. I was fortunate enough to be one of the guinea pigs and ride it before it opened.

I have friends from Köln who loved the center. I would recommend that unless you are very proficient in English you opt for the German translation when available due to the technical language used on the tours. This was their one complaint; they thought they could get by.

This will our (me and my son's (age 16) first launch.  Wanted to see a launch with him before he becomes an adult and other things become a priority!

Yes, we are suppose to be meeting the bus at the mall.  We will arrive in Titusville Monday evening and will make a dry run to the mall to make sure I know where I'm going.

Military ID doesn't provide access to CCAFS or KSC.  CCAFS is a restricted base and requires a specific badge.

PAFB is too far away.

Titusville is pretty limited in cuisine.

Paul's Steakhouse:  Food is..eh, OK, but the view of the river and KSC is great from the dining area.

Driftwoods:  This is a brand new resturant on US1.  I havent eaten there, but it looks like really nice dining.

Dixie Crossroads:  Informal, and great food!  You must get the rock shimp there!

El Leoncito on US1:  Great mexican food!

If you make your way over to Cape Canaveral, go to Thai Thai's on A1A by the USA Shuttle Logistics Depot.  They have an outstanding selection of asian cuisine and GREAT sushi!

Cocoa Beach has the better restaurants. Some good ones are Yen Yen for Chinese; Lobstery Shanty for American; Taco City for Mexican. All the chains are down on Rt. 520 as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. Restaurants in the Orland area can be such a hit or miss. I hate ending up in the over priced tourist trap. Every one I'm meeting is from Dallas so I'm going to stay away from BBQ and Mexican, nothing in FL can compete with Texas I've look for over 10 years.

Is Bunkys Raw Bar any good? I've found place that have a raw bar usually have good fresh seafood here in Florida. I will definitely check out Dixie Crossroads, peal and eat sounds good right now. Thanks again.

I love seafood. When I was there for STS-118 my friend and I had excellent meals at Rusty's and Grills, both at Port Canaveral. Makes me hungry just thinking of it. ;)

Hi,

thanks for the great answers. Thankfully, a couple of issues have already been resolved now. I got a room for the 22nd in the Titusville Super 8, but need to depart on that day. So I will have a fully loaded car, but I have heard others confirm that it seems to be OK to go with that into the KSCVC parking lot. I will also be early, because I purchased "breakfast with astronaut" (only ones available ;)) and that brings me to a 5am arrival time, right when arrival opens. I hope the traffic will not be too bad at that time (but, of course, I'll be early enough - I wonder if I really need the super 8 ;)).

And I second your notes on the visitor center. I had forgotten to mention that me and my family have been there multiple times and always enjoyed it. I came first roughly 20 years ago, when the Saturn V was still outside without any weather protection ;) A looooot of things have changed since them. It is always very thrilling to see the exhibits and the actual space hardware. My last visit was September, 2006, when I wanted to visit the STS-115 launch. But it was so much delayed, I needed to leave before it took off. I have never before seen a space shuttle launch and so I hope I will have luck this time.

This year, we'll come on the 22nd to KSC, take the upclose tour (hopefully it will be available and hopefully the RSS is retracted ;)). After launch (or before, depending on actual date), I plan to go on the "now and then tour", which my boy (9 years old) has never seen. It made a big impression on me when I saw it first (with *that* technology they flew into space...). We have also planned to stay for the world space expo, which I hope will be a real great event.

In case you are interested, I have begun a blog on my trip, it's available at http://spacelaunch.gerhards.net - so far, mostly mission updates (including personal milestones like "tickets received" ;)). Mission updates you obviously get more in depth-over here. If I have enough time, I plan to continue the blog while I am over at KSC - its a good thing to remember and maybe helpful for others.

Thanks again for all the information.

Rainer

Which bags are permitted at KSC on launch day?
I hope this is the right forum to place this question. I am more than slightly puzzled. Documentation that came with my tickets recommends to bring a couple of things (like big zoom lenses, tripods etc - good recommendation IMHO). But then, the security section says that "large bags" (whatever this is) are not permitted into KSC on launch days. I am right now packing for my trip (fly in from Germany) and I wonder what I can bring with me. We are a party of 3, 2 adults, 1 kid.

I've made a picture of the bags I have on my mind - I'd appreciate some feedback from those of you who have already been through this.

http://www.gerhards.net/Gallery-sts120-picfull-what_is_large_bag.phtml

OK, OK, I guess this sounds funny... but it's really important to me ;)

Thanks for any feedback!

I think you will be OK with those. Last two times I was down there (STS-116 & STS-117) they allowed me (and others) to bring in medium size backpacks. Mine had all my camera equipment in it and measured 18" x 12" x 8" (45cm x 30cm x 8cm).  They also allow the compact folding umbrella chairs that are carried in shoulder bags.  Security will check the contents of the bag before entering the Visitors Complex and will let you know if its too big and probably allow you to put them back in your car if thats the case.  Like I said, I think you'll be OK.

STS-120 Viewing (Additional Question)
As I have already posted, I have received vip tickets to the launch. The tickets are for the Causeway location.

In the information that I received, it states that I can bring a folding chair (that fits in a bag).  From anyone who has made this trip previously, it is worth it to bring a chair or is there bleachers set up?

Are there any suggestions for items that I should (or shouldn't for whatever reason) bring?

Thanks,

Ray.

There are some bleachers at the causeway site, but not enough for everyone.  I never did the VIP thing, but it would make sense for the VIPs to get those.  It's been several years, but I was never a VIP (a condition that remains unchanged) and never saw bleachers on launch day out at the causeway site.  (I brought a towel for sitting on the grass when I remembered.)

Your mileage may vary, and hopefully others who have been out there more recently can help with tips...

I would definitely bring folding camp chairs. For a couple of reasons: one seating is limited, you are also going to be out there for a couple of hours and bleachers can get uncomfortable and hot in the sun.  I would also consider bring an umbrella look for the type that can clip onto your chair it will make a world of difference when out in the sun. Then sunblock and bug-spray (you are in a swamp) Lastly remember to watch out for the gaters.

On another note the weather down here has been amazing at ~80°F withe a cool sea breeze. Cloud cover has been relative clear in the mornings with it building in the afternoon. These are the day I thank god I get to live in paradise. I hop it will stay this way through next week

Just some general advice about viewing a launch.  Don't spend the energy to photograph or video tape the launch.  You can grab a few shots after say a minute in to the flight but every thing you do will pale in comparison to shots you see on TV on in pictures so spend the moment enjoying the launch and don't focus on trying to "capture the moment".  The moment is captured by watching it and taking in all the details.  You can buy a poster later.  I've seen most of the launches and I never get tired of watching them.   The only launches that didn't seem to be as meaningful were the ones I was busy trying to take a picture or get some good videos.  It is hard to compete with NASA imagery so don't try.

I think I understand what you're saying, but at the same time I don't completely agree.  I think people will have varying reactions, and if I'd seen more launches in person I would probably feel differently than I do.

I agree that you miss something if you "watch" the launch from behind a viewfinder, but the videos and pictures I shot at the causeway were to make a record of my experience.  My goal wasn't necessarily high fidelity.  If anything, the bit I like best about the videos I shot is the sound of the launch from out there, but I also like some of the video of standing out on the causeway waiting for liftoff -- it reminds me of being out there at dawn a few times, in the middle of the night for others, and the excitement of being there.

The NASA video and all the professional photography is fantastic, but having seen a few launches in person, but I don't think they convey what it's like to be there.  Whereas for me, my crappy, amateur video does that better than a souvenir would.

But take this with a grain of salt, as it's just an opinion.

When I watched my only launch (STS-118), I had the camcorder on a tripod recording.  I moved it with my hand to try and track the vehicle without looking down at the screen once.

I was moderately successful.  The early portions of the flight came out good, and I did actually catch a fraction of a second that shows a falling SRB.

I agree that personal pictures and videos are some of the best souvenirs, but the memory and experience is even better.  So if it's your only launch for awhile, or first launch, your naked eye and a nice pair of binoculars are best.

I concur and always recommend it. It is very easy to take still photos without looking at the camera. Use a tripod and snap without looking; use a remote chord if you have an SLR. As for video, it's harder but if you don't zoom in too much you can either leave it as a static shot, or track carefully like that.

I thought the food as Rusty's was excellent, and have had others recommend it.

I hope there will be tents available for "congressional" guests again as there were for 117. That sure helped. If not I am hoping maybe I can stay on the bus and read or listen to my mp3 until closer to launch. ;)

One thing that will be different for this one is it will be the first time in years we will have a new voice of launch control. That will be memorable.

If this is your first launch then I would recommend just watching with your eyes. I've tried several times to snap photos of launches, but can't tear my eyes away from the magnificence of the vehicle rising off the pad and accelarating into the heavens... espcially when the sound HITS you!

This might be slightly off-topic, but, does anyone have any experience with buying or selling KSC visitor's center tickets? I bought admission passes and NASA Up Close tour tickets for Oct. 22nd, but now it looks like I might not need them as a connection has come through with a VIP tour (+ viewing too, from Banana Creek I think!!). So I'd like to try and sell the NASA Up Close tickets at least if I can. Now I know they say they are nontransferable but are they really strict about that? I mean, all the ticket is is a printout with a barcode, it doesn't have my name on it or anything.

Crossing my fingers for the FRR outcome...

I received tickets (by mistake) to see the launch from the KSC Visitor Complex but I want to take pictures of this launch. Is there anything I can do with those tickets? Is there any building, restaurant etc with a good view to take pictures from Titusville? Well, I am assuming the view would be better from Titusville than the KSC.

Titusville offers great viewing along the Indian River off of U.S.1. You'll be able to see the shuttle while it's on the pad.
From the KSC Visitors Center, you won't see the shuttle until it has cleared the surrounding trees...about 10 seconds or so after launch.

If you want to see the pad, then Titusville is better. However, Titusville is 12 miles while the visitors complex is 7.4, so take your pick. There are plenty of areas to view from, such as Spaceview Park and the Astronaut Walk of Fame. I do not know of any buildings with elevated decks.

How exactly did you wind up with visitors complex tickets by mistake? If you are supposed to get causeway tickets, call them and tell them they got the order wrong. As far as what to do with them otherwise, you can give them away. They are not in name.

Not true. Mike Curie did the tanking commentary for 118.

OK. I meant commentary through liftoff though.

If I bring my laptop to the causeway will I be able to get a connection there?? I never though of that but it might be good not only to make the long wait go by faster but also of course to keep track more closely of the count. With the camera, binoculars, sun block and other stuff I want to bring though, I don't want to overdo it. ;)

I doubt there's Wifi at that site, and if so, it's probably encrypted.  I'd think anything within KSC would be encrypted.

In Titusville there seemed to be very little wifi.  We were lucky enough to have a Verizon Wireless card.  The speed was about 550 kbps, which was enough to stream NASA TV and follow this site.

It was definitely nice to have.  I couldn't imagine trying to wait all that time before launch without following it on this site.  NASA TV is just so boring compared to what you can find out here.

It was easy -- here's a standard "walking uphill in the snow, both ways" speech:

It was easy to watch a launch in person after 15+ years of watching shuttle countdowns, mostly in sporadic, three-minute segments on commercial TV, dozens of them before Netscape was founded.  The causeway and elsewhere had the luxury of NASA Select/NASA TV audio.

When I visited KSC last summer, there was no public wi-fi in any area. The only option, as noted, is cell based services, like verizon.

All good points.  I guess the best approach is to capture the moment as best you can with a camera or video but don't get so caught up in capturing the moment and messing with the gear that you don't enjoy and savor the moment.  It happens fast so let your senses be ready for the ride.   Ideally have someone who has seen a  bunch of launches do all the work - with you in the picture/video so you can see view your own experience at a later date.   It is truly the greatest show on earth in my view.  I never get tired of watching the shuttle go up.

There are good points in here about enjoying the experience without too much work trying to fiddle with camera equipment.  I'm not a professional photographer by ANY means, so what I did with my two launches was to take a few isolated shots but I spent most of the time looking at the ascents through binoculars or (mainly) just my eyes.  That way, I got some neat pictures but also enjoyed the full experience.  If I could go to every launch in person, I would.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Great read, everyone!  Thanks for all the suggestions.

My family and I will be at the launch.  My boys (4 and 2) have been really interested in the shuttle since seeing the BIG SPACE SHUTTLE DVD.  Therefore, I convinced my wife to do this trip.  Was bummed on 9/10 that I could only get visitor center tickets (missed the KSC e-mails about ticket sales on Monday morning as we were camping), but after reading here that at 9:03a tickets were sold out, I do not feel so bad.

However, last week I dropped more $ for the Grayline tour when I saw that tickets for the causeway were available.  I'm so stoked.  I got home and told my oldest son...first thing he says to me is "why do we have to be so close?"  My wife was laughing her head off (jokingly) as she gave me a hard time about the extra $, the early (5a) departure, and the long day for both boys - and that they would not know the difference.  It wasn't the really the money...it was more the other two issues for her.

Anyways, I hope all goes well with everyone traveling to FL.  We'll be coming from CO on Monday.

One question:  what is a good magnification for binoculars to see the pad and launch from the causeway?

Thanks all!

Hi! We are a group of Italians here in florida to assist to the shuttle launch.
We all have bought Grayline tickets, and the travel agency gived us the pick up appointment to the Titusville's K-MART parking lot.
We have been told to be there at 5.50 am. Is there any of you departing from the same location?
Do you have the same departure time (I ask this because despite my multiple tentatives, the guy on the phone has been extremely unpleasant and in hurry. Of course you understand it would be better not to miss thei pickup).
If you can help me, please send a sms at +13215364208.
Thanks in advance...
Marco

Anyone planning on viewing the launch from Titusville around the pier, near McDonald's, PM me - I'll be there.

I'm probably mistaken but there was a short streak across the southern horizon of East Anglia at the right time and place to be Discovery as she passed across the Atlantic. Came from a similar position and followed a similar path to the ISS but lower in the sky. Whats the chances?
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

First time viewing from the "new"desk.  Being on the second floor allowed clear viewing of the pad above trees.   Had AC and internet access

I have to admit that I envy you.  I have never seen a shuttle launch/land, and I probably never will.  Almost was able to watch the STS-61 launch, but unfortunately the launch was scrubbed due to cloud cover cover the SRB recovery zone, and that was my last day in Florida. My family went back to Florida in 2001, but they did the visit Disney thing and family, I was a little upset to say the least.

I viewed from the pier in Titusville, just down the street from McDonald's. great view, unobstructed - lots of people.  So funny how there's always a mix of experienced viewers and newbies, and the new ones so often have NO idea what they're in for: One lady once it went coudlnt' stop shrieking "Oh my GGGGOOOOODDDDD" she was so excited!! LOL
Another guy thought he was an "expert" and announced to anyone listening that they were delaying 2 hours because of the ice problem..

has anyone bought launch tickets off of ebay?  My grandmother and I are going to see 124 at the end of may.  any advice on how to get tickets right as they go on sale for the causeway site?  does KSC offer causeway tickets for the subsequent launch attempts in the event of a scrub and after you have boarded the bus?  If they don't then i'll have to request VIP tickets.

I have not purchased tickets off of Ebay.

As for buying tickets for the launch (STS-124) - Find out when they are going on sale... I think usually about 3 weeks before the launch and go on sale at 9am (EST) by phone (not the recommended way) and online (supposedly the best way). Several NSF members were able to get tickets online for STS-123.

You can register on the KSC site to receive launch information: http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/eventSignUp.asp , this way you will get an email ahead of time from them letting you know when the tickets will go on sale (but keep checking the KSC website anyway).

On the day they are to go on sale - get online early (couple of minutes to 9am EST) to the tickets page... at 9am the links to the tickets will say something like "on sale now" and you can click there and enter your info. Someone recommended keeping all your info  - credit card type - in a word file for quick use (to copy & paste into the payment area). Do it as quickly as you can because the Causeway tickets sell out within minute(s).

Another post I've read said to have your cell phone with you & have the number to KSC tickets when you are out on the causeway (after the bus ride) in the event of a scrub so you can call & try to get more tickets the minute a scrub is called. We saw STS-117 and didn't buy tickets ahead of time as they weren't available. We were fortunate to be with a special group that was offered tickets to the causeway the day before the launch. We jumped on that and got lucky!

I am on the list for VIP tickets for STS-124 (fingers crossed) and am told we won't hear about that until about 2 weeks before launch. I'm sweating bullets about it. I want to make sure we get tickets and am tempted to also try to buy causeway tickets when the go on sale just to make sure I get "the good stuff" :-).

You contact your state's congress person - State Senators - (Provided you are in the states, if not - I have no idea how you manage it) - Find your senator here: http://www.senate.gov/index.htm - they usually have a website associated with their name on the look-up.

I submitted a request through their (our Senator's website) services contact area and then I followed it up with a phone call to make sure they received it. I'm glad I did too because they didn't get the first try. So I submitted another request and then followed that one up a week later. Again - Glad I did because they told me they couldn't get tickets to that. To which I said - gosh, I know that it can be done - so they checked around again (several times on hold) and eventually got me to the right person. They confirmed my request and said they'd just talked to someone somewhere & I was on the list. Yippee!!

It's never a for sure until they send you the goods though. They don't contact you until it gets closer to launch. I know that several people (and you should check the STS-123 thread on this same topic for ideas of experiences & other good ideas - http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=11655&posts=122&start=1) on the STS-123 thread got the tickets online & one person ended up selling the tickets they wrangled online because their VIP passes came through. So those must be issued after the tickets open up for sale through KSC.

I hope I can get VIP tickets or any tickets.  I have my plane reservation already made for STS-124 launch.  Is there any other ways I can get causeway tickets/ VIP tickets other than KSC, Greyline, or the Senate?  Has anyone tried getting VIP through their representative on the federal level?  I might try that and let you all know if it works.

Not necessarily, but it is a good sign.  If they get back to you and ask for names of all guests in your party then you're getting closer.

The person that answered said that they were not aware if an aide to Sen. Klobuchar has been able to get through to NASA yet concerning the VIP tickets.  What do you think will be the outcome of all this? I am keeping my fingers crossed and will be calling back at around 1:00-1:30 eastern time.  Wish me luck!

Just got the call from her office.  The application has been sent and i'll find out soon if the application was accepted.  Approximately how long did it take for your application to be accepted?

(This has nothing to do with STS-120, so locked. Move to STS-124 viewing which we will set up later. - James).
