STS-120 Crew Picture?
« on: 07/03/2007 01:12 am »

Does anyone know if STS-120 has an official crew picture?

I looked on the official NASA site and didn't see it.

I don't see an official one anywhere, but here is one of the crew in the training version of their launch/entry pressure suits.

I would have thought that the STS-120 crew photo would be out pretty soon as we've got Endeavour launching soon and it's unusual to leave it until after the mission before...

Great photo.

I know adding the truss and the arrays are needed, but in my view adding the nodes and the labs is when the station building really restarts again. I am really looking forward to the next 12 months of flights.

Done.  Hopefully it will get to stay.  I haven't uploaded any picture files to Wikipedia before.  The STS-120 Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-120

Good eye... it's Discovery with both an MPLM and the OBSS, which narrows it down to 114 or 121, but it takes some careful inspection to tell that it's 121 (the lack of the CMG gives it away).

Fitting, perhaps, as Stephanie was aboard at the time  :)

This may be a dumb question and probably one that should have been asked a while ago, but does anyone know why Stephanie Wilson is flying again so soon?  I believe she is the first astronaut since we started flying again to fly twice isn't she?

I like the effect of the reflection of a shuttle stack with MLP on the CT on the helmets.  Very nice.

That looks like a Photoshop job to me.  I have never seen Pam Melroy's official astronaut portrait, but I have seen the one for Eileen Collins and I am fairly certain it is the same image.

EDIT: Yeah...check out the portrait for Eileen here:

Yes, I admit to photoshopping this picture, I was wondering if it would fool anyone.

I most certainly wouldn't have had a problem with either Eileen or Pam taking command of an Apollo mission.

You have to admit, both look really good in those moon suits, don't they?

Free box of TANG if anyone can guess which two Apollo astronaut "bodies" I borrowed for the picture?

The photo originals are of Jim Lovell (on the left, mirrored), and Buzz Aldrin (on the right).

I'll pass on the Tang, though.

- Stephanie originally trained for sts-120 before being reassigned to 121 after Columbia.
- The commander of Sts-121 was Steve Lindsey, who is now head of the astronaut office.
- Steve praised the performance of the "rookies" during 121.
- Mark Kelly, PLT on sts-121 is commanding sts-124, and Mike Fossum of 121 is on the 124 crew as well.
- Perhaps Lisa Nowak would have been selected to another mission too, if not for her current difficulties.

Out of curiosity, do crew selections come down to the 'whim' of whoever is in charge of the Astronaut Office at the time? I doubt that Lindsey would risk alienating many fellow astronauts in 'his' corps by preferentially selecting his co-121 fliers over others.

As discussed in the crew assignments thread many times, selections are unpredictable. Politics, relationships, skill sets, background, luck, next in line.  you never know. It would appear that Steve Lindsey was looking after his crew mates.

Not a complaint. I'm happy to see one of the "Robochicks" flying again.

Not a complaint.

Well, it may "appear" that way, but it probably doesn't go beyond appearances.  At the time of the naming of 124, I believe Jim Kelly was assigned to Headquarters, so Mark was 'next in line', if you will.  While we don't yet know the reason for moving Foreman to 123, it became necessary for some reason and he had to be replaced.  The mission parameters of 10A (120) changed quite a bit since Michael was assigned (P6 relocation & Parazynski added), so that may have been a factor, but it looks like he might gain an EVA by moving to 1J/A.  Stephanie may have been the natural choice for stepping in due to (as noted above) her previous assignment to that mission.  Robotics play a critical role in 120, so with a shortened training period an experienced (and recently practiced) robotics specialist was called for.  That is another point for Stephanie regardless of the fact that she flew with Lindsey.  Mike Fossum is an experienced EVA astronaut, which was needed.  Familiarity with Kelly (rather than Lindsey) may have been more of an influence in that decision.  Lindsey flew with more people than just the 121 crew.  Anyway, kind of long winded, but I personally don't see the 120 & 124 assignments as preferential.

STS-124, the commander is scheuled to be Scoot Kelly, maybe I confused him with his brother from STS-118.
Is Lisa Nowak scheduled to fly again or what?
Can she join the 124 crew and move someone out?

No! She and Bill Oefelein got fired from NASA. Nowak in March and Oefelein in June.

Wrong end. 120 will move the P6 to the end of P5, which was launched on 116. 117 launched the S3/S4, on the starboard end.
