They'll change the orbit slightly so that the first EDW opportunity overlaps (same orbit) with the last KSC opportunity tomorrow in hopes that they'll get Atlantis down before predicted winds at EDW pick up.

Can anyone tell me roughly when the first EDW landing opportunity might be 2moro. Looks like their best bet given the forecasts.
See the last pages , page 9 there is a perfect good time table placed by one of this great forum members.

In three hours, the crew per MCC-H's advice, will perform another orbit burn to adjust the orbit of the shuttle to bring in an ealier landing attempt to KSC and EDW because for two weather reasons, as the day tomorrow at KSC goes on, showers/t-storms are more likely, and at EDW as the day tomorrow goes on, the winds get stronger there. So in order to land tomorrow, the best opps. is either KSC's first attempt or EDW's first attempt, this was called up to the crew by MCC-H over ten minutes ago.

Not necessarily. NASA has a host of landing strips all overthe world where shuttles can land.
But it's very unlikely. No shuttle has ever landed anywhere else but on these 3 sites

Straight from NASA's shuttle page:
The first opportunity Friday is on Orbit 218 and calls for a deorbit burn at 1:14 p.m. The second is on Orbit 219, which calls for the deorbit burn to begin at 2:50 p.m. and landing to occur at 3:51 p.m. at Kennedy.
If Florida weather does not cooperate, two opportunities are available at Edwards. The first is on Orbit 220. The deorbit burn would occur at 4:19 p.m. and landing at 5:21 p.m. The final opportunity is one orbit later with the deorbit burn at 5:55 p.m. and the landing at 6:56 p.m.
^^
Just a heads up for those who'll ask.

Hope to see an updated deorbit times listing later today after the this small orbit adjust burn occurs in 3 hours to line up the orbit for tomorrow's slightly earlier attempts to KSC and EDW, the times are just listed in this thread about 20 minutes ago, are no longer that valid after this burn occurs in three hours, so a warning there when referring to them.

Thanks Ford, but these times were listed before this additional orbit adjust burn was planned by MCC-H so these times are now slightly off, but by how much now (how much earlier the deorbit occurs), I don't know. For example they will probably target the first deorbit attempt on Orbit 217 AFTER this orbital adjust burn tweaks the orbital ground track slightly.

Now before someone tells me that a deorbit from orbit 217 is not possible, it is but it requires an orbital adjust burn to move the ground track more westward towards KSC starting on orbit 218 for this deorbit attempt for a landing at KSC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think NASA is really benefiting from the fact that the shuttle was put into a power saving state last week during the computer failure. If they hadn't they might have found themselves in another STS-116 scenario where you have only two days to land and you even begin considering White Sands as a way to get the shuttle down. So things worked out nicely.

will white sands/ northup be active tomorrow?
NO, the weather at EDW is good for the first opportunity for landing on Friday, the weather worsens slightly (stronger winds) for the second EDW opportunity, KSC has a chance of showers/t-storms forecast for both its opps. White Sands will not be called up unless EDW and KSC both are forecast to have bad weather for both of their opps., they want to land tomorrow, so I think EDW on the first EDW attempt is the way it is going to go right now.

CNN said that landing at Edwards would cost an extra million$. is this true?
That's a rough ROM. It's at least that much. Pretty much flying out a lot of OPF rats and putting them in hotels and food for a week. I'm not sure it's valid to add their labor time in. It definitely costs a week of turnaround schedule. But the standing Shuttle army is on the payroll no matter what.
And we want free cable and minibars in the rooms too

Changes to the plans coming up. They are bringing Edwards and maybe White Sands for tomorrow now, as per L2.

The entry situation is changing like the weather, except for the orbital adjust burn info which I know is going to happen, disregard my previous deorbit speculation, in a couple of hours we will have an updated deorbit plan for Friday listed here on the site. (the actual deorbit times for each site will be calculated by MCC-H after this one minute orbit adjust burn occurs when Altantis' orbit is changed slightly, then we will know when to expect the deorbit attempts).

Unfortunately we are hoping against each other, I live in Ft Myers.
One thing is for certain. Either one of us could have told them they would be wasting their time this afternoon. Anyone who has ever lived in coastal Florida can tell you that between June and September, you set your watch by the storms. That is what makes us a sub-tropical climate as opposed to a desert.
I was a little disappointed though. I had the afternoon off today. I won't be that lucky tomorrow.

Thank you sir.
So to clarify, as this came in the form of manager's notes all together.
Friday, KSC, Edwards. White Sands being evaluated, but not an option at this time.
Saturday, KSC, Edwards, White Sands (confirmed)
Sunday (the unlikely "must land" day due to a technical issue on the previous day), all three.
