Am I out of my right mind to send MSNBC an email heavily criticizing their severly dramatized report?
No, i encourage it.
Seconded! I'm really mad at the way the media has been handling this. No wonder both the Right and Left hate them! They've got to make a scandal out of everything!
They are taking freedom of the press to far! Contributing greatly to the apathy of spaceflight that is apparent in my generation and others!

Maybe they are talking about something else (another potential hit). I've not seen any note of it, so I don't know.
Let's get back on to mission coverage.

Only deserved a one line mention as it was only a 0.5. Nothing to go overboard with.
Sure would like to know how "extremely low magnitude" is interpreted as "downplaying."
Without knowing who said what, it's hard to not be biased against the press on this...

Ballistic? Where? Maybe I haven't seen the earlier stories from AP...?
"... they emphasized that the hit probably did no damage to Atlantis.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told NBC News that the area
would be inspected to make certain that the wing will be safe.
"...a senior NASA official downplayed the sensor detection, saying that a hit could be recorded even if no damage is done to the shuttle."
Sounds pretty well-informed and well-advised to ME?

I may be a newbie around here, but from what I've seen so far, if you don't know about it, it probably doesn't exist.

Sounds like the Russians expended a fire extingusher during the emergency. Does anyone know why the low power period was not better planned? They have had years and an extra 4 months to get this right.

I didn't say anything in relation to downplaying. I report what I get, and don't add anything around it (I'm not an engineer, so I can't).
All I wrote was - at the end of an article which had a seperate primary subject matter.
"NASA are also investigating a hit registered on Atlantis' Wing Leading Edge. Classed as a MMOD event (the first of the mission), it wasn't stated which wing registered the hit.
'There was also a 0.5g hit on the WLE sensor last night at around 2:41am. This may come during FI (Focused Inspection) since it occurred after the flight day 2 checkout.
'Attempting to determine the time of MMOD Case 01.'"
No interpreting, just wrote it as the info I recieved.

Re the potential MMOD hit signal, here is what I have been advised:
"At 162/07:41:22 (MET 02/08:03:18) the Wing Leading Edge Sensor on Port Panel 7/8 returned a possible MMOD indication."
This is the way NBC news is reporting it, as far as I have any influence over it is concerned.

Not your report, Chris, the MSNBC one.

CNN Headline News made no mention of this. They just touched on the OPS issue, but nothing about a wing impact.
I just sent an email to MSNBC. I'm curious to see if I get any replies. I was trying to be as nice as possible, but probably did seem quite confrontational.

What does the "g" stand for in 0.5g? Does it mean gram, and the true value is 5mN (millinewtons)? or does it mean 9.8m/sē, in which case I have no idea of the force involved, since I don't know the mass of the sensor?

Was the magnitude of this hit larger than previous events or was this event more significant than the events that occurred on the previous flights during ascent and on-orbit?
I don't see what is outstanding about this event that makes it a story -- or is this a story because the source of the event hasn't been explained yet?

Rather impressive response from MCC M. They were all over it, good work by the on station guys too.
Nice fire drill...
Wonder if the crews made sure to line up single-file.

Now that you mention the 0.5, I remember it. I also remember thinking that it shouldn't be a cause of concern.
I'm searching for an appropriate email address right now.
Used to live in Southern California...... I could deal with a 0.5 but don't get me started about those 6.0s.
