What do you think the odds are of this proposal actually taking place and how (if at all) would that affect future missions past 118?
P.S. On a somewhat selfish note, if this happens I'll have to shell out $10 for new patches since I've already got the ones for STS-117 and STS-118... :laugh:

I remeber a few post in this forum before about this change, the point being that it would be too heavy for Clayton to go up aswell with STS-117. Would it be possible to bring Suni down with 117, and then have a crew of 2 for two months until Clay comes come on 118?

If Clayton Anderson were added to STS-117, would this be the latest-ever that a crewmember has been added to a shuttle mission? I think so, but just trying to confirm.

Wayne Hale was only saying the other day in his presser that they would only consider doing this if either Sunni wanted to come home or they foresaw a further delay to the August launch. My betting is on the latter.

You'd think that they'd have to make a decision on this very soon as STS-117 is scheduled to be launched in just 1.5 months.

That is possible, but we have to wait and see, also Anderson's name will have to be removed from the STS-118 patch, so that one is going to change...

An early launch and later return. He's going to get about four months instead of 2.5-3.

I suppose, but then again he's being split up from the 118 crew who has trained with for a long time and made really good friends with...

Whats this do for weight considerations, etc for Atlantis with the 18 ton truss and now a 7th crewmember on the ride up. This isn't going to be like flying a freight train??

It's been noted in the on-going thread on the rollback and repairs; a recent post:

I think you can't find it because it's in the thread that Chris deleted.
I asked who wasn't going to get to go (remembering that this flight is very performance-limited), and Jorge answered "some middledeck payloads". ;-)

Of course those are concerns, but it seems to me that the change was done more because it just makes sense with a flight going up anyways, plus it gives Clayton a longer stay. I understand the weight limitations on the shuttle but it already seems that they have that figured out, so is this just the press sensationalizing the situation or is NASA truly worried that another two months in orbit would be disastrous for Suni?

Wow, the guy should be sacked for saying that without foundation. The move has nothing to do with that....STS-118 was simply due to launch around the time 117 is now set to launch.
This Gibson fella sounds like a moron.

I think he's referring to Charlie Gibson. He's been around a while and is a pretty good anchor. But I think we all need to keep in mind that most mainstream media sources will botch up any news when it comes to manned spaceflight and make it sound like the worst is coming.

Nothing new for the media to create an inaccuracy like this. Reminds me of 1996 when the mission to return Shannon Lucid from Mir got off after a long delay and one anchor referred to it as the "rescue shuttle."

The 117 crew was working on a new patch last week. I'd expect to see Anderson added to the bottom of the existing patch rather than a complete new design.

On his last teleconference, Wayne Hale said that the decision to rotate Suni earlier than scheduled would be either because she wanted to come back early or because the next flight was likely to be further delayed.
