STS-116 Crew to visit ESTEC (ESA Internal)
« on: 04/13/2007 08:00 am »
Space Shuttle crew with ESA astronaut Christer Fuglesang visits ESTEC

For the first time in almost a decade, ESTEC will have the honour to welcome a Space Shuttle crew "on tour". The crew of Space Shuttle STS-116 includes ESA astronaut Christer Fuglesang from Sweden. Their mission last December successfully added a truss element to the International Space Station. The astronauts executed three space walks, amongst them an unscheduled one to resolve a retracting problem with an unwilling solar array. (This was when space walker Fuglesang introduced a rather novel -and effective- space operations manoeuvre called "The Gentle Swedish Shake" ;->).

The crew will debrief staff from 10.00 - 11.00 hrs to share their experiences, show the highlights of the mission and answer questions.

Date: Wednesday 18 April
Time: 10.00 - 11.00 hrs
Place: Tennis hall ESCAPE (please calculate some walking time!)

More information on the crew and the Celsius mission can be found at http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Celsius/

If you are in Holland and want to attend, PM me, I MIGHT (i stress might) be able to get you a badge.

It was nice to see the STS-116 crew and hear them talk about their mission. They showed their STS-116 NASA mission movie and talked about that, after that there was time for some questions to the crew. And at the end there was some time to get autographs...here the photo's.

PS.

A special thank you to Jester for making this possible.
Jacques :-)

I had the great honour of meeting the crew last week and it amazes me how they always are happy and nice to people. Remember they've visited Denmark, Norway, Sweden (twice) all in a week. Do these people ever get tired? :)

Roman started with the words "We are at the end of our European tour, we feel like popstars, but it is great" (or something like that).

I never ever thought there would be such enormous interest as there has been," said ESA astronaut Christer Fuglesang, commenting on the European post-flight tour he has just completed together with the rest of the STS-116 Space Shuttle crew. In just nine days the crew worked through an intensive schedule of presentations and visits in five European countries.
