What you all fail to take in account is the wind speed and direction at the time of launch. I think you will fine the wind was pretty strong out of easterly direction and the camera position was to the west of the pad.

Unless the wind speed is on the order of a few thousand miles per hour - it is not an issue here. Sound travels at 1 mile for every 5 seconds. Nothing complex involved. That's what it is on Earth. So anything that doesn't jive with a 3 mile distance is an issue with the recording or playback.

I understand, I believe you about the camera location, just was explaining math based on the actual time and sound  delay in the video-- not debating a difference of half a mile in location.  I also was a bit hesitant to accept a young 21-yr-old college undergrad's statement as final and authoritative when there are so many much more experienced people on here who have been intensely following the shuttle program for many years, even decades.  Keep up the good work, the photographs ae astounding.  You are very fortunate to have such access.

Bill, I think that your Golden (MECO) could probably pull more spectators than an airshow.

Welcome!

Thanks Austin,
Glad to be aboard and your right, many of people have said that of all the photos that page is their favorite. But I think its just because they can relate to a dog more than the other photos.

Just to add a little info about video at YouTube, you can often see that audio and video are not in sync after upload (I have had it happen to my videos uploaded to YouTube) This would obviously skew any calculation attempt to derive distance based on visual/audio queues.

I know the person who shot the video . It was from the MLP electrical interface platform on CT2's side 3 . The MLP mounts can be seen in the lower edge of the video and those are from the west refurb site . Wind was the reason for the shake in the video , ground winds were pretty high that day .

I noticed those mounts also, at first I thought perhaps they were the old mounts for the MSS at the parking area near the pads from Apollo, but that would be a LOT closer.  Figured it was the parking spot mounts for the MLPs near the VAB.  3 miles seems good to me.  Youtube is full of crud sometimes.  Had someone on there who had a video that showed a UFO on Apollo 20 X-D  As we all know there was NO Apollo 20 (or 19 or 18 for that matter)

In all honesty I dont think a video camara would even be able to RECORD the sound if you were 2 miles or closer, probably would frag the mic on a non-military device.
