ESA confirmes delay. Apparently due to an issue with the Breeze.

The preparatory activities for the launch of ESA's GOCE satellite from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia had to be stopped yesterday afternoon (Sunday 7 September) by Eurockot due to an anomaly identified in one of the units of the guidance and navigation subsystem of the launcher's upper stage (Breeze KM ).

6 + 7 September 2008 / L-4/L-3
http://www.eurockot.com/alist.asp?cnt=20040976&main=3The excitement in the GOCE team is growing more and more every day since it is just 3 days left before the launch.
Today as well as yesterday the launch vehicle electrical check-outs have been carried out. Yesterday the filling pipe-lines were mounted on the booster unit as well. Now the launch vehicle is ready for the fuelling that will start on Monday September 8.
As to the spacecraft the electrical/functional check-outs have been carried out.
Also yesterday the football match between the GOCE team and the Russian Space Forces colonel team (the second one during this launch campaign) took place. This time the score became twice as better as the first game: Instead of 12:2 last time the Russian Space Forces won only 6:1. We are pretty sure that the GOCE team lost only due to the very bad weather: It was raining cats and dogs!

The satellite and its mission will not be affected by this launch delay.
Taking into account the duration of the refurbishment operations and the re-mating of the adaptor system, satellite and fairing, the launch has been currently re-scheduled for 5 October at the same time (16:21 CEST).

9 September 2008
http://www.eurockot.com/alist.asp?cnt=20040979&main=3We informed you on September 08, 2008 about the temporary halt of the GOCE launch campaign following the discovery of an anomaly of one of the units of the guidance and navigation system of the Breeze upper stage. While the resulting launch delay will not endanger the satellite and the mission, the upper composite will now be returned to the MIK and the GOCE spacecraft will be de-stacked from the upper stage for an investigation into the malfunctioning and subsequent replacement of the faulty unit. We will continue to inform you once the combined operations will re-start The new tentative launch date for GOCE remains October 5, 2008.
This is the last daily report for the moment. We will continue with our reports as soon as the combined operations are resumed which will be around September 20-25.

Daniel Lamarre invented and developed an ingenious method of calibrating GOCE’s main instrument – the gradiometer, for which he won an ESA award. Since it is impossible to calibrate the gradiometer on the ground under the force of gravity, calibration takes place post-launch.
