I think there might be a generational disjuncture here. I just want a car to run straight, stop straight and keep the water out.I think there's a big difference between "AI girlfriend" and "the computer voice from Star Trek."The latter is what is meekGee is actually describing, but you're making it out like he's describing the former. Cheap shot and shallow dismissal. I have to bow to your expertise in cheap shots and shallow dismissals.I accept this as your clear admission of guilt, and your complete retraction of the quoted statement as invalid and specious.

Almost every new vehicle these days "phones home" regularly.I have to say tho, while I really like me my AI, I also want a doomsday-ready car that runs even when the Internet is down, service is overdue, and the left front camera cover is dirty...

AI, as exemplified by chatGPT is very different from the braindead computer interfaces that came before it. It is a quantum leap, and if computer interfaces all become AI centric, doors and elevators and hot beverage dispensing machines included, it's a very good thing.

Long drive? Tough luck...

You don't even have to add any of the analog components of old.But that's not AI, that's just the marketing department having too much sway.--I think we should discuss the absence of spare tires as a broader social phenomenon, pros and cons.

What we want is Majel Barrett, not H.A.L.The nice thing is, that compute can easily be offloaded to the cloud-in-space (nebula?), whereas you want the actual driving AI to be local. You can wait 200 milliseconds for a voice command to process, and (unlike driving) it's okay if the connection gets interrupted.
