No worries, a well thought out procedure in best Soviet tradition. Paint wasn't even scratched ...      ;)

(well, maybe a little bit, when the nose departed from the tyre...)

They also shot a movie - nothing for the faint of heart!

(for anyone who thought that the move of Enterprise to Intrepid on a barge was daring)

The journey to the lift point was more daring, scraping the right wing against a bridge during the move.  Just gross.

A Man’s Risky Journey to Explore Soviet-Era Space Shuttle

Quote
May 12, 2024
An abandoned space shuttle site from the Soviet-era draws many urban explorers, even though it’s off limits to the public. Chris Luckhardt of Toronto is one person who risked getting caught by the Russian military to explore the decaying buildings and spacecraft that were left behind. He photographed his experience in detail and says he can only hope something will be done to preserve the site for space enthusiasts such as himself.

To continue this long-running thread, here is another video on the program. While there may not be anything new to learn, it features a curator whose interest in the subject of "The Abandon Series" inspired him to create this video.

Abandoned - Soviet Space Shuttles (Buran Program)

Quote
Nov 22, 2024
Upon the development of the American Space Shuttle program, The Soviet Union also embarked on their own version. This little known space program, which cost billion of dollars, was known as Buran and much like their American counterparts, their shuttle design was strikingly similar. But unlike the NASA shuttle, Buran would only fly a single non-crewed mission to space and ultimately fall into obscurity. Decades later however, remnants of the program still exist, some sitting completely abandoned. Join me today to find out why!

I have a concern that the more these guys go there and post this stuff, the more likely it is that at some point the authorities just say "Let's demolish it all to prevent further problems."

Soviet Space Shuttle Buran Atmospheric Test Article

Shuttlesource
8 Jan 2025

This rare footage showcases the Soviet space shuttle Buran during its powered atmospheric flight testing phase. Instead of adopting the glide testing approach seen in the U.S. Space Shuttle Enterprise program (which relied on a 747 carrier), the Soviets tested a unique configuration: a powered flight vehicle equipped with four engines. These tests were critical in validating Buran's aerodynamics and flight control systems.

I actually considered that trip when I was in Almaty a couple of years ago, but decided it was asking a little too much of my 67 year old legs. (I thought Almaty was the nicest, cleanest, best maintained city I'd ever seen and Air Astana was the best airline. Kazakhstan definitely surprised.)
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Somebody built a pretty good RC Antonov and Buran combo where they could take off, separate and land individually.

Just saw some pics on Twitter of the third flight model, which was on outdoor display for many years and is now being refurbished to be displayed in a museum.
