As the product of an intense effort to develop an efficient, powerful and (initially) reusable engine for the Energia core stage, the RD-0120 quickly became a candidate for modifications not only to adapt it to the changing needs of the Buran program, but also for use on other Soviet and later Russian launch vehicles and as a competitive option for the commercial market and Western government programs.
