The Gaganyaan G1 mission is to be the first of three unmanned orbital test flights before ISRO's intended first manned flight.

Currently, the Satish Dhawan Space Center already houses the LVM3 rocket stages S200, L110, and C25. On the other hand, crew module and service module for the flight are undergoing integration at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and U R Rao Satellite Centre, respectively. According to ISRO space agency chairman Sreedhar Somanath, the G1 launch “will be in December”. G1 will carry the Vyomitra ("space friend") humanoid robot to help verify systems (some publications say Vyomitra won't be in space until 2025).

The next launches under the Gaganyaan program are expected to be:
- unmanned G2 and G3 in 2025,
- the first manned H1 “if those trials are successful” - no approximate date was given, but it can certainly be expected to take place NET 2026, with a slim chance of making it in late 2025.

Further, Isro is hoping the achieve at least 2 — second test vehicle demonstration (#TVD2) and first uncrewed mission (#G1) of #Gaganyaan — by the end of 2024, while work on integrated air-drop test (#IADT) and pad abort test (#PAT) is also progressing.

“For G1, the rocket has reached the spaceport. Both S200s (boosters) are ready while the L110 (Vikas engine) arrived three months ago. The launch vehicle will carry a new cryo stage, the C-32 and not the C-25 which is a longer and different version…

…That stage is being made for the first time for Gaganyaan. Last week (of Sept) it went through the entire propellant loading mock-up — it was taken to the launchpad, did all the filling trials and brought back,” Somanath said.

He said Isro was ready with the rocket fully. The crew module is in the integration — propulsion and mechanical systems — phase at VSSC & service module wiring is going on at URSC. “So, items are coming now. Crew escape system is ready and moved to the spaceport,” he added.

Reiterating that #G1 would carry #Vyomitra, the half-humanoid, Somanath said the mission will also carry an unpressurized engineering model of the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS).

“We have a different design to test it. One seat will have Vyomitra and one will have ECLSS. That’s the mass simulation model,” he said. He emphasised that work is progressing simultaneously on G1, TV-D2, the Pad Abort Test (PAT), and the Integrated Air-Drop Test (IADT).

Delayed to February-March 2025 according to a tender by ISRO TELEMETRY TRACKING AND COMMAND NETWORK (ISTRAC)  for communications with the ships supporting the mission.

SN NISAR planned to launch in March 2025 after antenna repairs
December 14, 2024

[...]

A joint Earth science mission between NASA and its Indian counterpart is now scheduled to launch as soon as next March after being delayed to repair its main radar antenna.

In a presentation at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union here Dec. 11, Gerald Bawden, program scientist for the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission at NASA Headquarters, said the spacecraft is now scheduled to launch from India in a window that opens in late March.

[...]

The spacecraft is in storage for two reasons. One is to wait until the eclipse period ends Feb. 8. The second is that the launch pad at India’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre that will be used for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) launching NISAR must first support another GSLV launch of a navigation satellite, NVS-02.

The NVS-02 launch is currently scheduled for mid-January. “Once it launches, it’s going to take six to eight weeks to refurbish the launch pad” before NISAR can launch, he said. The mission is currently targeting a launch no earlier than late March.

The Gaganyaan-G1 Launch Campaign has been COMMENCED!! 👨‍🚀🚀

The bottom segment (called Nozzle End Segment) of one of the S200 side boosters of the FIRST-EVER HLVM3 rocket was stacked on top of its Flex Seal Nozzle, this morning at 8:45 am! 🏗

All the other stages, namely the L110 and C32, are also present at SHAR and will be integrated in the coming days.

In the meantime, the Crew Module and Service Module integration is currently underway at VSSC and URSC respectively, following which, they will be integrated with each other (forming the 'Orbital Module') at URSC and finally dispatched off to SHAR!

On the other hand, the Crew Escape System has already reached SHAR ~4 months ago.

If everything goes to plan, we might be looking at a January 2025 launch!

Liquid Propulsion Systems integrated on Crew Module for first uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan (G1)
January 22, 2025

On January 21, 2025, the Liquid Propulsion systems Centre (LPSC) of ISRO dispatched the Crew Module for the first uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan (G1), after successfully completing the integration of the liquid propulsion system. The Crew Module Propulsion System (CMPS) is a bi-propellant based Reaction Control System (RCS) and is meant for precise 3 axis control (Pitch, Yaw and Roll) of crew module. The control will be initiated following separation of service module during the descent and re-entry phase until the deployment of parachute-based deceleration system. This system employs 12 Nos. of 100N thrusters, pressurisation system with high pressure gas bottles and the propellant feed system along with the associated fluid control components. The Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS) designed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) was also integrated to the module at LPSC. Subsequently, the Crew Module will undergo further integration operations including avionics package assembly, electrical harnessing and checks at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) before dispatching to U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bangalore for the final phase of integration of the Orbital Module.

If this is what the capsule currently looks like, I doubt this will launch in March...

Launch now planned for NET Q2 according to ISRO's new chairman:

Quote
New ISRO chief interview: ‘We will have 3 uncrewed missions (before humans can go to space), of which first may be this year’

[...]

Another exciting mission for ISRO is the first human spaceflight. Where are we when it comes to the Gaganyaan mission?

[...]

Right now, I can say, the human rating of the vehicle is almost complete. We have done enough tests for all three stages of the launch vehicle. Then, we have done a couple of tests with respect to the crew escape system, but a lot more tests have to be done. As for the environment control and life support system, 600 to 700 control components have been acquired, such as pressure controls, temp controls, humidity controls.

Work is also ongoing on the vehicle health monitoring system. If anything happens to the launch vehicle, it will automatically trigger the crew escape system.

Of course, humans cannot be sent in the very first mission, so we will have three uncrewed missions, of which the first may be scheduled for this year, maybe in the second quarter.

What is this " may be scheduled...maybe in the 2nd quarter"   It was supposed to go up by the end of March. Why is there any question of a possibility ?

There can be procedures that take longer than expected to complete or a problem is found that takes time to fix.

No, this is a tendency of all large technical projects: Fantastic Scheduling.  Top management makes schedule decisions, especially those for external consumption, that have no derivation from the actual state of the project, or known future "challenges" to successful completion.

Spaceflight around the world is replete with examples through the years, but ISRO is particularly and thoroughly infected (in my humble outsider's opinion).

I am sorry to see that the new Chairman chooses Standard Operating Procedure in this regard.

Why not state Gaganyaan G1 will launch sometime in late(?) 2025?  Or is that too optimistic?

(I know that stating "we will launch when we are safe and ready to launch, and not one day before" may be political suicide in some hierarchies.  I don't know how shielded ISRO is from Indian politics.)

(If a substantial discussion requires, we'll splinter thread this.)

The G1 is to be followed by the G2 and G3 tests, and only then by the crewed H1. So when can we expect this crewed flight of ISRO? NET 2027?

Officialy maybe, informally the delay to Q4 isn't recent, it was known and spoken about in some conference since ~february, or at least this is what I've been told by people who closely follow the program.

As of the end of September, still targeting December but with CMS-02 (GSAT-7R) now NET November 5th and both GaganYaan-G1 and BlueBird Block 2 FM1 both scheduled to occur at the end of the year, it's likely at least 1 is slipping to January.

ISRO's AI-powered robot Vyommitra joins Gaganyaan crew capsule; here's what it will do in space [Sep. 29]

Quote
In December, ISRO will carry out its first test flight of the Gaganyaan spacecraft without astronauts. Instead of a human, the spacecraft will carry Vyommitra to test how the systems function in space, said ISRO chief V Narayanan.

Quote
Vyommitra will act as the human proxy on the Gaganyaan G1 flight. It will analyse flight procedures, how the spacecraft operates step by step, interact with the Life Support System, and monitor environment parameters such as air pressure and temperature. It also carries special sensors to track mission data.
