Bird Call Recognition from Videos
« on: 05/15/2024 01:03 pm »
Okay, I'm not a birder - but have recently downloaded Merlin from Cornell University as a phone app to recognize bird calls in my back yard.

Then I heard the prominent bird calls on the video of the SpaceX Tower segment being moved from Brownsville to Boca Chica for stacking.  I thought SURELY I'd get some hits from the app ...

But no, nothing with the Northeast American nor the North American bird call databases, so I loaded up the Mexican Gulf Coast database ... no hits.

Which leads me to wonder - what sort of clipping is going on in the audio of such streams that would defeat the recognition of such prominent bird song in the audio?  The bird song is DEFINITELY registering with the app (you can see the calls in the sound spectrum it shows).

Just curious.

Edit: Added link to the video - I'll delete it if it's too intrusive.

From "The Rhetoric of Interstellar Flight", by Paul Gilster, March 10, 2011: We’ll build a future in space one dogged step at a time, and when asked how long humanity will struggle before reaching the stars, we’ll respond, “As long as it takes.”

In my experience, Merlin could easily be confused by the amount of background noise in that video.

Sorry, I don't recognize the bird either.

Lifelong Texan and I frequently go down to work on our sites at starbase.
It's some sparrows and a seagull.

edit: I can hear the same / similar call outside my office window in central texas right now
