Rocket Lab Delivers Third In-Orbit Manufacturing Spacecraft for Varda Space Industries [Feb 12]

Quote
Rocket Lab USA, Inc. today announced it has delivered another Pioneer spacecraft for Varda Space Industries, Inc. (“Varda”) to Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB) in preparation for launch. It’s Rocket Lab’s third Pioneer spacecraft produced for Varda, and the second the Company has delivered for launch within a month.

The spacecraft will support Varda’s next orbital processing and hypersonic reentry mission, W-3.

[...]

Like its predecessors, W-3 is based on Rocket Lab’s Pioneer spacecraft, leveraging vertically integrated spacecraft components and subsystems, including spacecraft propulsion, flight software, avionics, reaction wheels, star trackers, separation system, solar panels, radios, composite structures and tanks, and more. The spacecraft will provide power, communications, propulsion, and attitude control for Varda’s 120kg manufacturing capsule, which uses microgravity conditions to develop products that are difficult or impossible to create on Earth.

Once on-orbit production is complete, Rocket Lab and Varda will conduct in-space operations, reentry positioning maneuvers to deorbit, land, and recover Varda’s capsule in Australia at the Koonibba Test Range, operated by Southern Launch.

[...]

W-3 is scheduled for launch no earlier than March from VSFB.

https://twitter.com/RocketLab/status/1889723263380758530

The launch provider isn't confirmed, and 1011-EX-ST-2024 (granted on January 17th) is still missing important documents (e.g. ODAR).

Quote
Following the successful Winnebago-1 mission and reentry, the remaining contracted Winnebago satellites (-2 through -4) are all in production and test. Winnebago-2 is flight ready and will be integrated onto Falcon-9 Transporter-12 for launch October 1, to reenter in Southern Australia’s Koonibba Test Range. Winnebago-3 and -4 are slotted for subsequent Transporter launches in 2025, re-entry locations to be announced.

BOTSAT’s Success Story: A Blueprint for Emerging Space Nations [Feb 19]

Quote
Initially slated for launch in 2023 and rescheduled to February 2025, the latest insights from the project team indicate that the launch will happen no earlier than March 2025, subject to weather conditions and pre-launch checks. In September 2024, the satellite successfully passed its Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) phase and is currently ready for launch, having passed technical and operational requirements.

[...]

After BOTSAT1’s launch, the team will begin stabilising the satellite by reducing its uncontrolled rotation or tumbling motion after deployment into space, known as satellite detumbling. For this, the team targets two ground stations to assist in the process: one in Bulgaria (home to the lead satellite manufacturer – Endurosat) and the BOTSAT-1 ground station at BIUST. Within the first week, the team will start receiving the first images from the satellite. An interesting point of view is that the first message to be shared by the satellite will be the beacon of the country’s national anthem in Setswana, Botswana’s national language.

[...]

Secondly, Exolaunch has been instrumental in the launch mission integration at an affordable price, which will be crucial in deploying BOTSAT-1 to its orbit.

Not confirmed for T14, but ICEYE's new Tranche 3 X57 SAR smallsat is probably on board. (SAT-LOA-20250221-00050) [Feb 21]

Quote
Orbital Altitude400-600 km
Orbital Inclinationxx97° ± 2
Expected LaunchJune 2025
Apogee/Perigee590.0 km
Orbital Period5779.9 s

This analysis considers two of nine possibly transmitting satellites (eight Tranche 2 and one X57) for three primary reasons. First, ICEYE will have no greater than two satellites on each future SpaceX rideshare launch, has no control over these satellites’ orbital altitude and inclination insertion parameters, and will not maneuver the nine total satellites together into any grouped flying formation after all their deployments.

SANA Registry shows X54, X55 and X56 launching in June 2025. It also shows X51, X52 and X53 launching in February (Transporter-13?) and X65, X66 and X67 launching in May (Bandwagon 3?).

YAM-8: Entering the Longbow Era [Feb 28]

Quote
As the very first Longbow headed to space, YAM-8 is hosting several unique customer and Loft-owned payloads on one of our hallmark rideshare satellites. The increased size, weight, and power (“SWaP”) of the Longbow platform allows us to fly larger payloads and more bandwidth- and compute-intensive missions. This gives customers access to all of the on-orbit resources they need while also delivering the capital efficiency of shared infrastructure.

[...]

The Longbow platform is delivering on that commitment through three key areas:

 • Enhanced On-Orbit Capabilities: The Longbow’s increased size, weight, and power allow Loft to accommodate customers with larger, more demanding payloads across a broad spectrum of LEO missions. Whether customers are deploying power-hungry sensors, or need high-powered compute to run AI applications at the edge, Longbow provides the infrastructure required to rapidly collect and process data at a scale.
 • Faster Speed to Orbit: Loft is eliminating the traditionally lengthy satellite procurement process and dramatically reducing mission timelines by batch procuring Longbows so they are “on the shelf” when the customer is ready to fly. The Hub acts as an abstraction layer between customer payloads and the satellite bus, providing standardized interfaces for power, command & control, compute, and communications. By eliminating bus-level non-recurring engineering, customers avoid the lengthy design, development, and testing cycles associated with bus-level design changes – ultimately helping them get their payloads to orbit sooner and with less risk.
 • Highly Reliable Hardware: The Longbow satellite platform is based on the robust, flight-proven Airbus Arrow bus platform, which currently has over 600 copies in orbit today. Leveraging this proven bus platform allows customers to benefit from the reliability and economies of scale achieved through large-scale production – in turn reducing hardware risk on orbit and reducing total cost of ownership for Loft’s customers.

NASA's "Aerosol Radiometer for Global Observation of the Stratosphere" (ARGOS) sensor is a hosted payload.
