Is there any hint as to why all these cracks were there in the first place?

No, but 120 is an "old" tank. 125's one crack might mean it's simply part and parcel of tank foam.

From some of the doc's/memos posted to L2 it appears likely that the amount of 'handling' this tank has been through was a major contributor to the cracks - the LOX line is allowed some flex/contraction/expansion and it could be the underlying ablative cork layer just isn't able to completely survive lots of repeated flexing without developing internal cracks near the support hardware.

Would the tile damage seen here require a replacement before launch or is it ok as-is?

As-is. Nothing of concern there. More comestic, and she's an old girl.

Understood. Thanks.

What Flightstar said and add a little more. They've already been repaired. That's what the upper surface TPS looks like after a repair.

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5218 the image in that story shows some hefty crack. Would have though foam is hardly a mystical science, after 25 years of dealing with it?

Foam is a very hard science to master. Endless Griffin comments on this, but it is not simple.

The 6th was the latest on the ATK quick look (surprising good for accurate timelines in the VAB).

We'll know more tomorrow with holiday ending in the US.

Looks like Thursday (checking for confirmation) is the mate-date for ET-120. Writing an article on STS-120 status (orbiter and tank).

Great article Chris! You mention that 'hookdown' is set for 0800 local time tomorrow morning. Does that mean when lowering the ET between the SRBs is complete?

I think that is when the crane is over the tank and the hooks lowered to be attached to the ET before the lift. There will be a USA engineer on here who'll know for sure.
