H3 : JAXA DESTINY+ : 2028
« on: 06/04/2023 11:54 pm »
In 2024 JAXA is planning to do a 2028 fly by mision to the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. 3200 Phaethon is an active asteroid. Destiny+ will also test new technologies like light-weight solar array panels among others like the acquisition of small upper stage solid-state kick stage technology. Launch vehicle will be the Epsilon S rocket with mentioned kick stage.
(Hopefully the Epsilon S will be ready next year)

The information linked above is from 2020. Here is some newer stuff: A detailed mission broschure of June 2021, and a promo video uploaded in November 2022, which confirms the 2024 launch date. Would do two Moon swing-bys in 2026+.

And now with further delays with getting Epsilon-S to flight the launch vehicle has now switched to the H3 with launch delayed all the way to FY 2028 - arrival time at Phaethon remains at around 2030.

They may add a flyby of Apophis to this mission.

ESA and NASA aren’t the only ones interested in this flyby event. As New Scientist reports, the Japanese space agency JAXA is planning its Demonstration of Space Technology for Interplanetary Voyage with Phaethon Flyby Dust Science (DESTINY+ ...this acronym is more tortured) also has plans for Apophis. As its name suggests, DESTINY+’s primary mission is the 3200 Phaethon, but on the spacecraft’s journey toward this asteroid, it’ll make a flyby of Apophis in 2029 as well.

This rocket will launch Ramses too...

This will be the first time a Japanese rocket will launch a European Space Agency probe. The ESA's Apophis observation probe "RAMSES," officially announced in August, will be riding alongside JAXA's "DESTINY+," which will replace Epsilon S. We explain how the mission came about.

RAMSES was scheduled for April 2028.

Ramses needs to launch in April 2028 to allow for an arrival at Apophis in February 2029, two months before the close approach.
