No junk in the trunk for Crew Dragon 6?
« on: 03/02/2023 08:22 pm »
Noticed there was no payload in the trunk, are crew missions payload limited or is it a flight rule?
TIA.

Maybe there is no external payload to be transported. Most items in trunk end up being attached to outside of ISS.

Crew missions so far have not carried external payloads. They are only allowed to fly high priority ORU's for critical EVA's otherwise they fly nothing. There hasn't been a need to exercise the payload option. It is preferable to fly with no external payloads to reduce propellant consumption.

I wonder if it has to do with abort situations as well.

That trunk is so big it's always a shame to see it empty.
Starship, Vulcan and Ariane 6 have all reached orbit.  New Glenn, well we are waiting!

It primarily provides the preferred launch profile during the nominal mission scenario and select booster engine out scenario's that would still allow the primary mission to continue.

I wonder if that will change when flying NASA astronauts to commercial stations (which nominally need to use certified crew vehicles like Dragon and Starliner)?

I always felt using excess upmass capacity to lift water is an easy solution, as you can meter it in based on final hard payload mass (including the astronauts weight).
