What should the first words spoken on Mars be?
« on: 01/24/2023 06:50 am »
How about something like this?

"We stand on the shoulders of giants. Marco Polo, Zheng He, Ibn Battuta, Christopher Columbus, Lewis and Clark, Roald Amundsen, Charles Lindbergh, Neil Armstrong. Today we take this step as one species on a journey that will take us to the stars. Humanity's story has only just begun."

It is cheesy and it is "Hollywood" but it is something I would say if I was the first human to land on Mars.

Would the colonial undertones be problematic? Should they name drop great inventors and scientists like Edison, Ford, Oppenheimer, Einstein, Musk, etc. instead of those explorers?

Tie it to technological and scientific advancement instead of colonialism?

Humanity's story is just beginning implies humanity is destined to a interstellar future. Elon Musk would love it.

A human mission to Mars would be the true start of humanity's story. Is that a mindset we want to promote?

Funnily enough Danielle Poole says "It's only the beginning" in the latest FAM trailer.

With the likelihood a Starship-like vehicle will be the first manned lander on Mars, with its elevated airlock:
"Wow, that sure was a whole lot of small steps!"

"I thought it would look more red"
From "The Rhetoric of Interstellar Flight", by Paul Gilster, March 10, 2011: We’ll build a future in space one dogged step at a time, and when asked how long humanity will struggle before reaching the stars, we’ll respond, “As long as it takes.”

Only two of those could be considered "colonial" ;)

The most prominent and most likely first words that will be spoken immediately after the first human footsteps on Mars will be:

“Help I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up!!”

Or less seriously:
