It appears that the KU band system on the ISS may be turned off to protect the EVA crew with their worksite near the solar arrays, hence no TV coverage right now (this was mentioned by the MCC and crew when the spacewalk was starting, that the ISS KU system would have to be turned off if they are working near the mid point of the P6 arrays). The next shuttle KU pass will be around 5:00 PM EST (10:00 PM GMT).  Sunrise for the next pass is at 4:45 PM (9:45 PM GMT).

Hi all, 1st time poster.

Had a question as to why they need to disable the KU system when the EVA team is in that particular position near the SA's. Is there the possibility of interference with the EMU's?

I wouldn't easily cut the frays of a wire that still has to be spooled on a pulley AND be released again on a future mission from that same pulley and having to pass all these grommets again.

You couldn't see it if it wasn't cloudy. It's not traveling in the sun.

Beamer quickly moving up the all-time EVA list... up to ninth place now.
If this EVA lasts the full six and a half hours allotted, Beamer's final rank will be #5; if it extends the four and a half hours estimated, he'll be #6.

Hi Phil R, welcome to the site, I hope you enjoy your stay here!

The ISS Ku band (television) system is disabled right now because the ISS KU band antenna is pointed upward towards the top of the P6 mast where the spacewalkers are working and the KU band signal system uses a high dose of radiation that could harm the astronauts if they are in the way of the signal. The shuttle KU band is clear for the EVA but its antenna cannot point to a communication satellite called TDRS-West until 5:00 PM EST (10:00 PM GMT), so we will have no TV until then.

Sounds like they'll be ready for a retract.

Tension! Wow.
The beer I just got out of my fridge is to the health of Robert Curbeam and his fellow crewmembers on Discovery and ISS.
Now for the retraction bit....

BIG smiles in MCC when Beamer reported that the guidewire is tight along its entire length.

Radiation concerns. That thing pumps out alot of radiation per second so you would want limit your exposure to it, by de-activating it.

On the plus side, it could give him PHENOMENAL super powers...besides what he already has.
