SpaceX Workers PPE
« on: 04/21/2022 04:41 pm »
This might be interesting to some.  I notice that some SpaceX workers have to wear some apparel that no other launch vehicle contractor wears.  Care to guess?

The only one I recall raising an eyebrow about recently was seeing a worker on a lift near the white TPS material on a starship being in garb which is likely protection for the fibers associated with that material.

What else are people seeing?

Respirator and/or coveralls to protect against the soot buildup on the boosters?

Yes, disposal coveralls.  They were black. Looked like coal miners.

They wear black a lot. Somebody made it fashionable.

The SpaceX folks have an affinity for black livery. The pad ninjas is an example.

Yes, disposa(ble?) coveralls.  They were black. Looked like coal miners.

We are old Jim
The young people who have “made black fashionable” have no interest in coal miners (20th century denizens who don't dress in black) but fancy that they know about “ninjas” as Zed-Noir said.

Terrible colour for both visibility and working in the hot sun.

DuPont makes Tyvek disposable coveralls for hazardous work.  But they're usually white:

OTOH, mosquitos have a preference for bright colours.

Off topic, but colors to avoid mosquitoes found to be green, blue, white or purple

Good thing all that soot's going away with Starship.

We have very dusty but "food grade" areas in the chemical plant where I work. They are standard PPE for some of the guys who work out there and we require visiting truck drivers to don them as well. You might otherwise emerge looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Not much fun in the heat.
