Green Launch hydrogen gas gun launcher
« on: 04/18/2022 09:00 am »
Forum search is failing me...

A hydrogen light gas gun launcher is vying for attention.

Echos of project SHARP and Gerard Bull (but they don't seem to be using a Martlet style projectile?)

They recently popped up over at the New Atlas science news site, even though they've been puttering along since 2017

I suppose if SpinLaunch can get VC funds, these guys have a shot... pun intended

This is an interesting group, their apparent argument is it's optimized for the constellation of microsatellite : smaller the electronics get, more G-forces they can handle. They're also saying the constellation approach mean gun won't have to be adjusted significantly after each launch.

It’s probably a better approach than Spinlaunch. Easier to make the tube longer to reduce peak accelerations (scales linearly, unlike scaling cubed like spinlaunch’s vacuum chamber), and acceleration occurs along the long axis instead of to the side.

Georges Melies beat them to it 120 years ago. He just forgot to call the gunpowder "green".

I raise you a Jules Verne, who got an Apollo program look-alike (Apollo 8 TBH) 100 years in advance, except with a huge gun rather than a Saturn V.  With a launch pad (launch hole ?) in Florida less than 100 miles from future KSC.

Jules Verne used gunpowder or guncotton, whose maximum velocity is much less than hydrogen. Tsiolkovsky correctly pointed out gunpowder wasn’t nearly high enough gas velocity.
