Cosmonauts at Baikonur tried on the ship before the flight to the ISS

07.09.202218:06

On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, the main and backup crews of the 68th long-term expedition to the International Space Station performed the first  “fitting”  of the Soyuz MS-22 manned spacecraft at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

In the assembly and test building of the 254th site, the cosmonauts tried on the Sokol-KV2 rescue suits and tested them for tightness, after which they checked the service equipment in the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, studied the flight program, got acquainted with the onboard documentation and those delivered to the ISS cargo. They also practiced dynamic operations and supervised stacking with equipment and materials.

In addition, the crews inspected the Progress MS-21 cargo ship, which is undergoing ground tests before launching to the station on October 26, 2022.

The main crew includes Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio. Their understudies are Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub and NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara.

The launch of the Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket with the Soyuz MS-22 from the 31st site of Baikonur is scheduled for September 21, 2022. The ship is named K.E. Tsiolkovsky" in honor of the 165th anniversary of the birth of the founder of theoretical cosmonautics Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

Frank Rubio and Dmitry Petelin planted their threes on #Baikonur today. This is one of the oldest - and most beautiful - traditions of the Soviet/Russian human spaceflights.

"On Sunday, September 18, 2022, the Soyuz-2.1a rocket carrying the Soyuz MS-22 (K.E. Tsiolkovsky) manned spacecraft was transported to the launch pad 31 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

By tradition, removal of the rocket from the assembly and testing facility began at 05:30 Moscow time (07:30 local time). After the rocket was placed in an upright position and the service columns were brought together at the launch site, a joint team of Roskosmos enterprises began preparations for the launch.

The launch of Soyuz-2.1a rocket with the ship Soyuz MS-22 is scheduled for September 21, 2022. The crew includes members of the 68th long-duration expedition to the International Space Station - Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin, as well as NASA astronaut Francisco Rubio.

The ship Soyuz MS-22 is named after Tsiolkovsky in honor of the 165th anniversary of the birth of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Russian scientist, inventor, and founder of the theory of space exploration. The head fairing of the rocket bears a portrait of the scientist and the inscription "165 years since the birth of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

Thus, Roskosmos continues the tradition of naming Soyuz spacecraft. In March 2022, Soyuz MS-21, named in honor of Sergei Korolev, chief designer of rocket and space equipment, flew to the ISS, while in April 2011 and in April 2021, respectively, Soyuz TMA-21 and Soyuz MS-18 were named after the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin."

Soyuz 2.1a with #SoyuzMS22 has been rolled out on Baikonur this morning. On the fairing you can see an emblem of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Another remarkable moment is the old emblem of Roscosmos (not a Rogozin's star).
