We are getting "Starfield"

as well as a new "Mass Effect"

While we are getting some big budget space sci fi games we are also getting fantasy space games as well.

Could even fantasy space stuff like "Guardians of the Galaxy" or even "Star Wars" get young people interested in space and spaceflight?

Or would the more sci fi oriented stuff like "Starfield" and "Mass Effect" do a better job while KSP would do an even better job than sci fi in getting people interested in space?

There is also "Kerbal Space Program 2".

I remember one person on here saying that humanity might retreat to virtual worlds but can virtual reality be used to inspire people to work for an interstellar future?

Some of the fantasy based games might steer young people to have an interest in space & spaceflight, but I would guess it will be an exceptionally small number that make the transition to doing the hard work in the real world to educate themselves properly for the field.  Working in compliance to the real laws of  physics will be really boring compared to the fantasy of a game.

If I was a gambler, I'd put my money on Kerbal to deliver more people who take lessons from that game into some life path that contributes to space or spaceflight.

If they really grab young people's imagination I think they will have a significant impact. Many space related science people say they were initially inspired by written science fiction books.

Sadly short of KSP2 (which I'm worried about on the quality side...) these are mostly fantasy. Hard sci-fi games are exceedingly rare because its much easier to do space opera / fantasy jank where space is just a backdrop and usually not even in any way meaningful.

No Man’s Sky and Astroneer are interesting. Neither count really as hard scifi, but they have ISRU-oriented gameplay and it’s pretty awesome to explore the worlds. They’re Voxel based, so the terrain is modifiable. In Astroneer, you can tunnel down to the planet’s core.

KSP2 is a great indie project. Lots to do in the first game and there will be more in a second one. One of my favourite sandbox games which I recommend everyone to test out. At least you can take a copy of the first game and decide do you have an interest in the second one or not.
