First on Dragon'e: everything you wanted to know about Anna Kikina

08/26/202209:00

Anna Kikina  is  the only woman in the Russian cosmonaut corps. Soon she will go on her first space flight and will do it on the "Dragon"  -  the Crew Dragon spacecraft of the American company SpaceX Elon Musk. The press service of Roscosmos and the Cosmonaut Training Center talks about Anna's journey into space.

What is significant about her flight?

Anna Kikina will become the fifth Russian female cosmonaut.

This will be the first flight of a Russian woman into space in eight years (the previous Russian woman, Elena Serova, went into space in 2014 and returned in 2015).

This will be the first flight of a Russian representative on the Crew Dragon spacecraft.

This will be the first flight in 20 years by a Russian on an American spacecraft (in December 2002, Valery Korzun and Sergei Treshchev landed on the Endeavor shuttle).

This will be the 22nd Russian who flew on an American spacecraft (while Sergey Krikalev made three flights, Vladimir Titov, Yuri Usachev, Vladimir Dezhurov and Nikolai Budarin - two flights each, the rest one each)

This will be the second flight of a Russian woman on an American spacecraft (in May 1997, Elena Kondakova flew on the Atlantis shuttle).

Who is Anna Kikina?

Anna is 37 years old. Tomorrow is her birthday! She was born on August 27, 1984 in Novosibirsk.

In 2005, Anna took courses at the Ministry of Emergency Situations as an instructor in teaching the population the basics of first aid, and has a lifeguard certificate.

In 2006 she graduated from the Novosibirsk State Academy of Water Transport with a degree in Emergency Protection. In the same place in 2008 she received a second higher education in the specialty "Economics and management at the enterprise (transport)". According to her first education, Anna Kikina  is a hydraulic engineer, according to her second  education, she is  an economist-manager.

For some time before joining the cosmonaut corps, Anna worked as a program director at Radio Siberia Altai LLC. It was there that she learned about the beginning of the selection for the cosmonaut corps. “Before that, I didn’t even think about space. More or less understanding what kind of activity this is, having assessed the situation, I decided that this is exactly what I want to do next. I was on fire with the desire for self-realization in this profession, ”  Kikina  said in one of her interviews.

In 2012, Kikina became a participant in the first open competition for selection to the cosmonaut corps. In total, 43 applications were submitted from women, of which six were invited to the Cosmonaut Training Center for full-time selection. As a result of the selection, only Anna was included in the group of eight cosmonaut candidates (the rest seven were men) who were allowed to train.

From 2012 to 2014, Anna underwent general space training. At this time, she learned to fly the L-39 aircraft, jumped with a parachute, underwent weightlessness training on board the Il-76MDK laboratory aircraft, tests in an isolation chamber, diving training, and survival training in various climatic and geographical zones. “We “survive” with the equipment that is made specifically for astronauts. The conditions are the same, but the items you use are strictly defined. This is a feature. You learn how to properly deal with the descent vehicle, how to get out of it. To leave or not to leave, to use it in cover or not. Radio communication, access to communication, attracting attention to oneself. You adjust, you get out of the situation. You, for example, have only one machete for the entire crew. There is nothing special to dig in the snow, there is no shovel, ” Anna shared with the  media earlier.

In 2014, by decision of the Interdepartmental Qualification Commission, Anna Kikina was recommended for admission to the position of test cosmonaut of the Roscosmos cosmonaut corps. In 2017, she took part in the SIRIUS international isolation experiment, which simulated a flight to the moon.

Since May 2021, Anna Kikina, together with Sergey Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin, has been training as a member of the ISS-67 backup crew as a flight engineer for the Soyuz MS-22 manned transport spacecraft and a flight engineer for the International Space Station.

In July 2022, Roscosmos State Corporation and NASA signed an agreement on cross-flights. Within its framework, American astronauts will fly on Russian Soyuz spacecraft, and Russian cosmonauts on American spacecraft. The agreement provides for three exchanges of cosmonauts. As part of the first of these, NASA astronaut Francisco Rubio joined the crew of the Russian Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, and Anna Kikina was appointed mission specialist for the crew of the Crew Dragon manned spacecraft as part of the Crew 5 mission. Now Kikina is preparing as a member of the ISS-68 expedition.

The launch of the American manned spacecraft Crew Dragon is planned for the fall of 2022 from the spaceport at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In the near future, Anna will travel to the United States for final training before the flight.

What else is interesting about her?

In 2021, Anna Kikina became the ambassador of the clothing collection for Russian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2021, the Barbie brand released a doll in the image of Anna Kikina, who inspired the creators with her talents, successes and personal qualities. Astronaut Barbie is presented in two versions of costumes: in a training suit and an Orlan-type space suit. The doll is released in a single version and is not intended for sale. The first Barbie astronaut doll was dedicated in 1965 to the flight of Valentina Tereshkova.

Anna Kikina  is  a master of sports in polyathlon (all-around) and rafting. Certified by PADI OWD. Airborne instructor. Completed more than 150 parachute jumps.

Six hours of spacewalk training for installing the new solar panels on the ISS took place in the pool at NASA's Johnson Space Center. We also conducted diving training for this work in July, and we were able to complete the training smoothly as the work procedures were being established.

The Crew-5 mission to the International Space Station, which will involve Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina, is scheduled to be launched on October 3

26 AUG, 04:36

MOSCOW, August 26. /TASS/. Exams and exercises have made it clear that Russian female cosmonaut Anna Kikina is ready to work in the country’s segment of the International Space Station (ISS), said Deputy Head of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center Oleg Kononenko who heads the national cosmonaut squad.

"Anya is completely ready to work in the Russian segment, the results of [her] exams and training make it clear that she will successfully cope with this challenge," Kononenko said at a TASS-hosted press conference on Friday.

The Crew-5 mission to the International Space Station, which will involve Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina, is scheduled to be launched on October 3. The Crew-5 will also include NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada, as well as the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s astronaut Koichi Wakata.

Cross space flights to be continued, if experience is positive — Roscosmos

Sergey Krikalev stressed that the cross-flights agreement had been signed with the aim to increase the space programs’ resilience to potential contingencies

26 AUG, 06:37

MOSCOW, August 26. /TASS/. The experience of cross-flights (by Russian cosmonauts on US spacecraft and US astronauts on Russia’s Soyuz vehicles) to the ISS can be extended, if the results of the first three ones are positive, the executive director of Roscosmos for crewed space programs, Sergey Krikalev, told a TASS news conference on Friday.

"If the experience is positive, then we will go ahead with it," he said.

Krikalev stressed that the cross-flights agreement had been signed with the aim to increase the space programs’ resilience to potential contingencies. In particular, he said that without cross-flights any hypothetical postponement of a launch of a Russian or US spacecraft might lead to the absence of either country’s representative on the ISS.

"In order to guarantee the presence of at least one of our partners in the national segment, we made such a decision (on cross-flights - TASS). Should such a situation occur, then at least one crew-member from the partner country will be present in the national segment," Krikalev added.

On July 15, Roscosmos announced the signing of an agreement on joint cross-flights by Russian cosmonauts and US astronauts to the ISS. Russians will take a seat on US spacecraft thrice. The launch of the Crew Dragon spacecraft of the Crew-5 mission, on which Anna Kikina will go to the ISS, is due on October 3. The crew will also include NASA’s astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA’s astronaut Koichi Wakata. Russia’s cosmonaut Andrey Fedyayev will fly on the sixth spacecraft of the mission. His standby is Konstantin Borisov, who will also undergo training for a flight as part of the Crew-7 mission in 2024.

Pre-flight press conference: Anna Kikina spoke about preparations for the flight on the Crew Dragon spacecraft and the ISS-68 expedition

08/26/2022 16:51

In July this year, Roscosmos State Corporation and NASA signed a cross-flight agreement under which US astronauts will fly on Russian Soyuz spacecraft and Russian cosmonauts on US Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Since May 2021, cosmonaut Anna Kikina has been training as part of the ISS-67 backup crew, after which, together with cosmonauts Sergei Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin, she became part of the ISS-68 prime crew. In accordance with the cross-flight agreement, Anna Kikina was assigned as a Crew-5 mission specialist to fly to the International Space Station on the Crew Dragon spacecraft. The launch is scheduled for October 3, 2022.

Today, August 26, an online press conference was held at the Cosmonaut Training Center dedicated to the launch of the program of cross-flights of Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts to the ISS. It was attended by Roscosmos test cosmonaut Anna Kikina, Hero of Russia, pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, deputy head of the Cosmonaut Training Center - cosmonaut commander Oleg Kononenko, who is undergoing training as part of the ISS-68 backup crew, and Hero of the Soviet Union, Hero of Russia, USSR pilot-cosmonaut, executive director for manned space programs of the Roscosmos State Corporation Sergey Krikalev.

Participants answered questions received in advance from media representatives and social media users.

Journalists drew attention to the fact that Russian cosmonauts had not flown on foreign ships for about 20 years, in response to this Sergey Krikalev spoke about the cross-flight program.

“This project was created to increase resistance to possible emergency situations,” answered Sergey Konstantinovich . “The agreement has now been signed for the first three flights, but if the result is positive, we will continue the program.”

Anna Kikina, when asked about the relationship with the American crew, of which she will become a part of the upcoming flight, answered that they are comfortable, high-quality and efficient.

“I am satisfied with the learning process both in the USA and in Russia. I see an interest among all specialists in the fact that manned astronautics lives on, and we continue to fly, ”said Anna .
Oleg Kononenko, in response to a question about the level of training of Anna Kikina, noted her complete readiness to work on the Russian segment of the International Space Station, and also spoke about the qualities of a modern cosmonaut.

“A modern cosmonaut must be willing and able to learn, be very sociable, and also work in a different social group and environment. If a person is determined to constantly improve his knowledge, he has a direct road to astronauts, ”summed up Oleg Dmitrievich .

Anna Kikina will be the first woman in the last eight years to work on the International Space Station as part of the Russian part of the ISS-68 crew. At a press conference, Anna turned to girls who wanted to join the cosmonaut corps:

“Astronaut is a very interesting profession, it is available. It is important to meet high professional requirements, but everything is real. If you feel the strength in yourself, then the roads are open, ”said Anna Kikina.

The videoconference was held online together with TASS, Roscosmos State Corporation and the Cosmonaut Training Center.

Every year in the birth month, there is an annual check such as a proficiency examination for aircraft pilot training and a medical examination. Today, I reviewed the NASA T38 trainer's emergency escape system, parachute descent, landing, water landing, and survival. It is a valuable training that leads to the maintenance and improvement of operational qualifications in spaceflight.
