I believe "921 Rocket" is a Western designation and not used by China. The official name is currently CZ-5DY, with Xin Yidai Zairen Huojian (New Generation Crewed Rocket) used in the past.

So many different names. I think 921 might've started on Chinese forums; but it's definitely a fan name. You've also got Next Generation Crew Launch (NGCLV) and CZ-FH (Western fan name). Hell I think CZ-5DY is just a temporary official name as well.

nah, '921 rocket' referred to this rocket proposal coming from CMSA aka '921 office', aiming to send human to the moon. and '921 rocket' `s name comes from 9ifly for the reason mentioned above.
CZ5-DY is Mr Long(Long lehao)`s exclusive naming, previously CZ5DY is the 6 booster variant of the LM5, which shares the same goal with the current '921 rocket'-landing human on the moon
And 'DY' simply means landing on the moon. -

At this point, i'm surprised that they didn't just call it Long March 10, the number is definitely free and reserved. And the capabilities of this rocket is more of less in line with the original cancelled Long March 10 anyways.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- China is currently developing a new carrier rocket and manned spacecraft as part of its goal to land astronauts on the moon by 2030, the country's space experts said.
The new carrier rocket Long March-10 is mainly developed for the purpose of sending spacecraft and moon lander into the Earth-moon transfer orbit, said Rong Yi, a rocket expert with the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
The Long March-10 uses liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and kerosene as propellants. It has a total length of about 92 meters, a takeoff weight of about 2,187 tonnes, a takeoff thrust of about 2,678 tonnes, and a carrying capacity of no less than 27 tonnes for the Earth-moon transfer orbit.
A non-booster configuration of the new rocket is capable of conducting missions for transporting astronauts and cargo to the space station. Its total length is about 67 meters, the takeoff weight is about 740 tonnes, the takeoff thrust is about 892 tonnes, and the low-Earth orbit carrying capacity is no less than 14 tonnes.
The Long March-10 is a strategic support for China to land astronauts on the moon before 2030, and it is expected to prepare for its maiden flight in 2027, said Rong in a recent interview with Xinhua.

China's main rocket engine for crewed lunar missions completes new trial

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday completed a new trial run for the main rocket engine of its future crewed lunar missions, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
The 130-tonne class liquid oxygen kerosene rocket engine is an upgraded version of the current high-thrust engine being used in a new generation of carrier rockets such as the Long March-5.
The rocket engine will be used for Long March-10 carrier rockets in the country's crewed lunar missions.
Zhou Xianqi, a researcher with CASC, said the trial met relevant test requirements and several high-altitude simulation tests will be conducted in the second half of this year to finalize the relevant performance and parameters. -

Notwithstanding the fact that the CZ-5DY once labeled in online sources as the "921 rocket" has since evolved into the CZ-10, after Project 921 was initiated in 1992, Xiandong Bao of the Shanghai Astronautics Bureau revealed plans for a modular family of modern rockets to support future Chinese manned space activities, and six SLV designs for manned missions were conceived, five of them being dubbed Type A, Type B, Type C, Type D, and Type E. Although the SLV designs envisaged as part of Project 921 was issued by the Shanghai Astronautics Bureau in October 1993 for inclusion in the 8th and 9th Five-Year Economic Plans, none of these proposals were built because financial resources were put instead into the development of large solid-fuel rocket motors for military use.
