No pictures of Khayyam seem to have been released following the launch, lending support to the idea that it uses a new reconnaissance satellite platform built by VNIIEM. The Iranian news agency IRNA did publish an infographic purportedly showing a drawing of the satellite, but that appears to be no more than an artistic phantasy (see attachment 1). The only real drawing of the satellite is the one seen in a presentation of NPK Barl last year (see the first posts in this thread).

Meanwhile, someone on the NK forum has posted Google Earth images of what is believed to be the Iranian mission control center and/or data processing center for Khayyam, located not far from the city of Karaj (coordinates 35.766787, 50.785668).  It was built by NPK Barl in the past two years (nothing was seen yet in this area in imagery from early 2020).

And for what it's worth, the Iranian space agency has denied a report in the Washington Post that Khayyam will initially be used by Russia to provide reconnaissance imagery of Ukraine. It said the satellite will be controlled by Iran "from day one" and that no third country is able to access the information sent by the satellite due to its "encrypted algorithm".

This does look very much like the drawing that the Russians released in 2021. Any source for this? Thanks.

Thanks very much. TLEs seem consistent with reentry in this area around 0803 UTC Aug 9.

The pictures of Khayyam in Replies 85 and 88 seem to come from tweets of Israeli researcher Tal Inbar:
https://mobile.twitter.com/inbarspace

The picture of the model of Khayyam in Reply 88 was made during a press conference given by the head of the Iranian space agency Hassan Salarieh on August 10. Here is video of the press conference:
https://www.ruptly.tv/en/videos/20220810-026-Iran-Space-Agency-denies-espionage-in-Ukraine-war-allegations-after-successfully-launching-new-satellite

Meanwhile, the Military Studies and Analysis Institute (MSAI), described as "an Iranian think tank focusing on military and defense studies with strategic and doctrinal approach", has released an interesting infographic on Twitter, which among other things focuses on the military uses of Khayyam.
https://mobile.twitter.com/m_s_a_institute

I understand this is an independent research institute, so the information should not be considered official.

So far all the pictures of Khayyam have come from Iranian sources. The Russians themselves have not published any, suggesting the satellite uses a platform built by VNIIEM for a Russian military satellite, possibly Razbeg. Iranian sources have said that three more Khayyam satellites have been ordered. One day after witnessing the launch at Baikonur, Roscosmos director Yuri Borisov paid a visit to VNIIEM in Moscow, ordering the company to begin serial production of satellites.

Wondering if Khayyam has any EgyptSat heritage? The two satellites look somewhat similar and have similar performance, though IIRC EgyptSat-A was made by Energia and not VNIIEM.

More details on Khayyam in this week’s edition of The Space Review:
https://www.thespacereview.com/article/4475/1

Most of the new information on the satellite comes from a patent published in August 2021 by NPK Barl, the Russian company that is responsible for the satellite’s ground segment, but also seems to be in overall charge of the project on the Russian side.
https://patents.s3.yandex.net/RU2753201C1_20210812.pdf

Although patents rarely refer to the projects they are related to, the code name for the Russian-Iranian project (“Project 505”) is actually seen in one of the drawings accompanying the patent.

A few of the drawings from the patent are attached:
1) A cut-away drawing of the satellite, with four solar panels extending downwards at a 45° angle to its axis.

2) The remote sensing telescope. Actually, three possible telescope designs are described in the patent with apertures of 0.535, 0.75 and 1.1 m. The one seen in the drawing is the one with an aperture of 0.535 m and is presumably the one installed on Khayyam. Aside from a panchromatic channel, the telescope operates in four multispectral channels.

3) Khayyam in launch configuration, sitting atop the Fregat upper stage inside the payload fairing of a Soyuz-2.1a rocket (indicating this was the originally planned launch vehicle rather than the Soyuz-2.1b that was eventually used for the launch). As can be seen in the drawing, there is enough room inside the fairing for two more identical satellites.

4) Three Khayyam type satellites inside the payload fairing.

There is reason to believe that Khayyam (manufactured by VNIIEM) is identical to or inherits design features from Razbeg, a small reconnaissance satellite that VNIIEM is building for the Russian Ministry of Defense. Last June, a VNIIEM official said three satellites identified only as MKA 1, 2 and 3 were scheduled for launch in the second half of the year. Possibly, these are three Razbeg satellites that will be launched by a single Soyuz-2 rocket as seen in one of the drawings. So far there are no indications that any such launch is still planned before the end of the year. It may have slipped to 2023.

Considering the detailed description of the satellite given in the patent, it is strange that the Russians enveloped its launch with so much secrecy. No drawings or pictures of the satellite were released by the Russians after the launch (although the Iranians did release a drawing and also showed a scale model of the satellite).

The live webcast shown on Roskosmos TV did not show the usual animation of the launch vehicle after separation of the four strap-on boosters. Instead, the webcast switched to a view of the launch pad. However, it turns out there was another live webcast that did have animation of the rocket (possibly provided by TsENKI). This disguised the true design of the satellite by depicting it as a featureless black box. I’ve only seen this version of the webcast on two Iranian YouTube channels.

Thanks for that video. Here's a screen grab of the black box.
