In parallel, intensive preparations for the July launch are underway at Vostochny. For example, specialists from Roskosmos' subsidiaries, the Vostochny Space Center (a branch of the Ground Space Infrastructure Facilities Operation Center) and the Lavochkin Science and Production Association, transported the Fregat upper stage from the launch vehicle's assembly and test building to the fueling and neutralization station at the cosmodrome.

These works are part of the launch of the fifth batch of 36 spacecraft from the company OneWeb from the cosmodrome Vostochny, scheduled for July 2021. Roscosmos specialists will soon begin refueling the upper stage with propellant components and compressed gases. According to the schedule, the work on the refueling of "Fregat" will take place until June 18, 2021.

Baikonur prepares to launch OneWeb spacecraft

06/23/2021 18:45

In parallel to Vostochny, the planned activities under the OneWeb spacecraft launch program are continuing at the Baikonur cosmodrome. After preparing the necessary ground equipment, specialists from the Yuzhny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground Space Infrastructure Facilities) and the S.А. Lavochkin (part of the State Corporation "Roscosmos") began to conduct pneumatic vacuum tests of the upper stage "Fregat".

The present work is being carried out at the technical complex of the site No. 31 of the Baikonur cosmodrome. They are being carried out in preparation for the launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket and 34 OneWeb satellites from the Baikonur cosmodrome. It will mark the third launch of OneWeb spacecraft from Baikonur.

The launch operator for OneWeb is the European launch services provider Arianespace together with Starsem under contracts with Glavkosmos (a subsidiary of Roskosmos).

The universal upper stage "Fregat" was created at NPO Lavochkin and is intended for use as part of medium and heavy launch vehicles in order to launch spacecraft into various specified orbits. The Basic Upper Stage marked the beginning of a whole family of high-performance upper stages that are and are being built around it.

The basis of the "Fregat" structural and layout scheme is a block of tanks, built according to a monoblock carrier scheme. It has a torispherical configuration, consisting of six spherical containers welded together, separated by spherical bottoms. Four of them are oxidizer and fuel tanks, two tanks are compartments for onboard instruments and equipment (one of them is sealed). One of the containers (sealed) houses a monoblock of the control system, including satellite navigation equipment and fans of the thermal regime, in the other (unpressurized) - a small instrument compartment, service blocks, as well as high-pressure balloons of the cruise propulsion system and the propulsion system for stabilization, orientation and ensuring the launch.

The upper stage "Fregat" ensures the efficient performance of all tasks related to the launching of one or several spacecraft into working orbits or trajectories departing from the Earth. The entire process of launching is carried out autonomously, without interference from the Earth. The highest reliability and almost perfect launching accuracy provide the upper stage with undeniable competitive advantages over world analogues.

Specialists at the Vostochny Space Center (a branch of the Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities Operation Center, part of Roskosmos State Corporation) used a transbuilder gallery to transport the space head module, assembled the day before, to the launch vehicle's assembly and test building. The part of the rocket includes the Fregat upper stage and spacecraft installed on the transition farm of the satellite company OneWeb.

In accordance with a comprehensive training schedule, a joint crew of specialists docked the upper stage with the third stage of Soyuz-2.1b rocket in the assembly hall of the Vostochny cosmodrome. In the next few days there will be a general assembly of the space rocket, which is the final operation before it is taken to the launch pad.

The launch of the fifth batch of 36 OneWeb spacecraft from the Vostochny launch site is scheduled for July 1, 2021. It will be the fifth fully commercial launch from the launch site. The launch operator for OneWeb is the European launch services provider Arianespace together with Starsem under contracts with Glavkosmos (a subsidiary of Roskosmos).
