That's the whole point - if you don't specifically look you see nothing. Today when I got up, I looked through my Google News feed, the front page of the New York Times, and the front page of the LA Times. Not a peep about the launch on any of them. Of course, as soon as I specifically looked there were plenty of stories, as you point out. But for anyone who looked at the headlines from some pretty major news sources, and did not specifically search (probably 99% of all these source's readers) there is no way they'd have known more astronauts were on the way. That's the part that's novel.
