October 5: A Soyuz-2 rocket to launch the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft (Production No. 749, ISS mission 65S) from Baikonur to the International Space Station, ISS.

During the early planning of the ISS flight manifest in 2014, the launch of the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft was planned for September 13, 2021, however in the provisional schedule prepared by Roskosmos at the end of August 2020, the launch of Soyuz MS-19 was slated for October 5, 2021.

At that time, the spacecraft was expected to carry three Russian cosmonauts: Anton Shkaplerov, Sergei Babkin and Mukhtar Aimakhanov, members of the 66th long-duration expedition to the ISS.

If the August 2020 schedule worked as planned, Soyuz MS-19 would become the first crew vehicle docking to the nadir (Earth-facing) port of the UM Prichal module added to the Russian Segment of the station less than a month earlier.

At the time, the Soyuz MS-19 mission was expected to last 174 days and land on March 28, 2022.

Channel One showed a story about filming a film in space. The flight of the actor to the ISS is planned on the Soyuz MS-19 in October 2021 during the change of crews. Of course, this is all great. But who from the Soyuz MS-18 crew will stay for a year because of this? Question...

If anyone was wondering what sort of 'ordinary' Russian woman (who is not a professional actress) might apply for this movie role, this link introduces one.

Although we cannot be sure that the Movie in Space project "Challenge" will definitely happen, actresses and well-qualified candidates continue to submit their credentials.

Anastasia Barannik is a sky-diver, model and dancer. She has already completed some familiarisation at the Cosmonaut Training Centre, and does appear to tick a lot of the boxes which both the movie makers and cosmonaut trainers will be looking for.

If successful, Anastasia would become the youngest woman in Space!

20 finalists have been selected for the main role in the scientific and educational project under the working title "Challenge", which will be partially filmed in space. In total, about 3 thousand applications were submitted for the competition.

Among the 20 girls chosen by the creative team, there are both famous actresses and representatives of other professions (pilot, psychologist, research assistant, etc.). At the next stage of the selection of the finalists, a medical examination awaits, which will begin in March 2021 and will determine which of the girls fully meets the criteria necessary for a flight into space.
...
Filming is scheduled to start in October 2021

No confirmation thath the flight will be Soyuz MS-19; filming needs not to start with the space scenes.

It is pretty clear that crewed Starliner will not launch by September 2021, which means that NASA will want to have a seat on Soyuz MS-19. With one cosmonaut as commander, this would leave no seat for additional film crew; filming would need to be done by ISS crew.

My take: Film project slips to Soyuz MS-21 in ~April 2022, and one "exchange cosmonaut" will fly on SpaceX Crew-4 in the same month, so Russia will have two crew on ISS while sending two film people with MS-21.

The actress and her stunt double for filming on the ISS will be determined in April
The director of the project, Klim Shipenko, said that he was already undergoing a medical commission in order to also make a flight into orbit.

MOSCOW, March 14. / TASS /. Members of the main and backup crews of the crewed spacecraft, on which the actress will travel to the ISS to shoot the film, will be determined in early April. This was announced by the director of the project Klim Shipenko on the air of the radio "Komsomolskaya Pravda" .

“I don’t remember the exact date now, but something was in early April,” Shipenko said in response to a question when the members of the main and backup crews of the spacecraft will be known, on which the actress is supposed to fly to the ISS for filming the film “Challenge”.

The director also said that he is already undergoing a medical commission in order to also make a flight into orbit.

In November last year, Dmitry Rogozin, the general director of Roscosmos, posted a video on Twitter , in which it was reported that the shooting of the first feature film in space was scheduled for October 2021. The space drama with the tentative title "Challenge" is a joint project of Roscosmos, Channel One and the studio Yellow, Black and White.

This week, Channel One announced that 20 applicants for the main role were selected for the final part of the competition. Among those who passed the selection, mainly actresses, including well-known ones. Roscosmos cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov and project director Klim Shipenko will go into orbit together with the actress.

Funds from the state budget

Director General of JSC "Glavkosmos" Dmitry Loskutov, in turn, said that filming the film would not require additional funds from the federal budget.

"The shooting of the film is financed by Channel One. In general, the project will be carried out within the framework of the existing federal space program, that is, it will not require any additional funds from the federal budget," Loskutov said.

He stressed that the Glavkosmos expects that the project will contribute to the inflow of extra-budgetary funds into the industry through the development of commercial space flights. "This task was assigned to the Glavkosmos last year. Part of the work, which includes the selection, training of cosmonauts and two project participants, the manufacture of flight equipment - a spacesuit, lodgements, will be financed by Glavkosmos," he explained.

Loskutov stressed that Glavkosmos also does not use budget funds. "Everything that we invest in this project, we earned ourselves. Despite the pandemic, last year we had decent financial performance," he said.

Although no official list of actress-candidates for the 'Movie in Space', and Soyuz MS-19, has been released, from media reports, interviews and other sources it has been possible to piece together a fairly reliable list.

There is also a good deal of background information, the planned timeline, and some thoughts on how this project will play out, here:-

Over the last three weeks, the twenty actresses (and other qualified women) have been examined and evaluated at GCTC, in three groups of six or seven. It is reported that around 50% were eliminated on Day One, of the three day process.

The finalists (number unknown) are back at GCTC tomorrow, for more tests and assessments, so that the final two 'winners', prime and back-up can be announced on 12th April, the day of Gagarin 60 celebrations.

There is no fresh information on the status of the Director, Klim Shipenko.

Rogozin: the decision on the candidacy of an actress and understudy for a movie about space will be made by the director.

The head of Roskosmos noted that he is not authorized to give the names of applicants.

SAMARA, April 23. /The final decision on the candidacy of an actress and her understudy to participate in the film about the space "Challenge" will be made after the medical commission is passed by the director of the film, Klim Shippenko. The head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin told reporters.

"At the end of the day, we must understand that always at the finish line the director decides who he will work with. It is important for us now to show him who <...> of them will withstand the difficulties of the flight," he said.

Rogozin noted that he gets "daily updates" on how the medical commission works. "Several girls have been selected, a huge dropout, unfortunately, is going on, but in principle - expected. The doctors are very picky, they watch the whole situation, it seems that in principle a person is physically healthy for normal life, but there are so high requirements for work in space, even for a short flight, that many are not suitable," explained the head of Roscosmos.
He added that he is not authorized to announce the names of the candidates. However, according to him, the director of the film has already confirmed basic medical indicators, he is physically healthy. "The director is undergoing the last tests, in my opinion, today," Rogozin said, noting that the final information should appear on May 15. Earlier, Channel One reported on the selection of 20 contenders for the final part of the competition for the lead role. In March, they began undergoing a medical commission.
It is expected that in October, a film crew with the working title "The Challenge" will go to the ISS. Last November, Rogozin posted a video on Twitter announcing that the shooting of the first feature film in space was scheduled for October 2021. The space drama with the working title "The Challenge" is a joint project of Roscosmos, the First Channel and the studio Yellow, Black and White.

As reported by TASS, citing Rogozin, Glavkosmos expects that the project will contribute to the inflow of extra-budgetary funds in the industry through the development of commercial flights. At the same time shooting the film will not require additional funds from the state budget.

There are 4 final candidates!

According to: Russian Space № 4/2021:

in an interview with Paweł Vlasov, head of Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center:

Quote

- And what is the fate of the flight engineer of the back-up
Oleg Artemyev? To which crew are you planning to assign him to?

- He will be the commander of the back-up crew for the Soyuz MS-19.
Soyuz MS-19 crew, and then he will leave for the spring launch of the next year
as the commander of the prime crew.

Quote

- When is the planned space-age years of the test cosmonaut
Sergey Korsakov, whose place in the main crew of Soyuz MS-18
NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei? Will he be the first Russian in the crew
U.S. SpaceX Crew?

- Probably. In May of this year, he is flying to the U.S. for training
on the American segment of the ISS.
At the same time, he's also our first in line for a years.
So we'll see which comes first - on our Soyuz
or on the American SpaceX.
