Space.com board great crash MkII
« on: 09/25/2005 02:55 PM »
I saw some people asking if Space.com's uplink board was going to crash again last week and it's been down for maitinance for over 40 hours now. Anyone know what's happened?

Yeah, tried to see how their Shuttle poll was doing and it's been down yesterday and today.
Let's go and explore space.

No idea. A database purge would only take a short while, so I don't think it's that. A forum realignment is another 30 min job if that.

I'm not sure what they are doing, but I hope it's not serious.

The forums are closed for maintenance. Still. Hmmm, I suppose if it was broke they'd say more than that.

Hi space cosmonauts from around the Earth.
I'm 54 , and this is my very first post here.
I'm known as spaceman186000mps on space.com or Superluminal

I don't work for NASA although I wish I did.
I'm just an armchair astronaut that watched the very first American human launch of Alan Shepard in the 50's and every one since. I was 6 then.

First off this American would like to complement the Soviet Government for their excellent human space program. American astronauts and NASA too, have my respect.
Co-operation is how to achieve the Moon, Mars and beyond.

As far as what's going on with space.com message boards, I don't know either.
I suppose since 911, that things have changed and ordinary people aren't suppose to know certain facts.

I'm sure though, That the situation can't be helped, and is in good hands to rectify the situation shortly.

If anyone learns anything about the situation, please post it here so we all may know.

Thanks...

PS

I posted this pyrimid rocket launcher in Environments on space.com a week before the latest crash.

Before the crash 40 people or so had viewed it but no one replied.

I wonder if some of you, would give your opinion of it here.  Thanks again.

Might be an idea to start a new topic with this so people can reply to it.

I tried to edit the word pyramid but I waited past thirty minutes to catch the error.  sorry

Let me elaborate on my Idea
The four sided pyramid's steel roller bearing hydraulic plates would close quickly behind the rocket as to rises, increasing lift and channeling the exhaust to huge massive compression tanks to be recycled with various compounds as fuels to be burned again to power steam generator turbines.

Also... The precision ability to raise the ground level for the first 3000 feet or so behind the rocked would obtain more thrust momentum at launch.

I realize,  I'm talking mega bucks to build something like this.
It would be such a good thing for the environment to harness some of this tremendous rocket power at liftoff.

I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this.

It's all very interesting, but this thread is about the SDC crash.

Go back to the General Discussion section, and post as a new topic (you can copy that same post you did before, and then post the one above and then we can discuss it :)

If it's been down for two days and no notice of this about to happen and nothing more than that message then looks like it's crashed.

Well that's a strange comment. Here is a good alternative and has more than the 183 members on that other forum!

Ah, well an alternative to free space would be to go to a bar and have a fight ;)

Hi Spacefire ;)

Actually, we'd kinda like you on here. I don't want this to be some Shuttle group hug of a site. Got to have debate (so long as you don't start on our Engineers, cause they've been known to bitch slap bashers with one finger) ;)

On SDC's problems. I honestly don't know myself. I've mailed a moderator I know there, nothing back yet. I think I was on it just before it went to the message it's saying now (50 hours ago)...and there was no pre-empt of it happening. There was a thread asking if SDC (the uplink part) was about to crash, but just from posters saying it was getting slower and slower to post.

I asked my database mate and he said that sounds like the database was in a desperate need of a purge (if it's on an SQL format). So it might of crashed out the database, which is a nightmare to get back on even with a backup. If it's PhP, then it'll be a case of uploading a massive file back in (which usually can take a few attempts and can take many days). But he's guessing as we don't know.
