I saw the new movie recently, and it certainly has some amazing visual scenes. I hadn't read Frank Herbert's novels, and had only previously seen the David Lynch movie back in the 80s. But whereas both movies are of similarly considerable length, this latest reboot movie covers less than half the story ground that Lynch's movie did. So we're left to await a sequel to get the rest of it. With the slower pacing used this time to give an in-depth look, I think they'd have been better off doing this in a big-budget TV series format, like Game of Thrones, since there's so much intrigue and intricacy to this storyline.

I hope they do GOT level for Dune on TV, but only from 'God Emporer' onwards. Those latter Herbert novels could be condensed; only keeping the main points etc to make a rich, universe-building story that moves fairly smartly. Some of the later novels by Brian Herbert weren't too bad. Some others, IMO not so much! Villeneuve should stop with 'Children of Dune' in my opinion and let HBO or someone else deal with the others.

I thought this was great.  I'm a huge Denis Villeneuve fan, as well as a fan of the books.  Like any adaptation, you have those bits that you miss from the book.  It's fascinating where Villeneuve chooses to focus though.  The trailor plot is all but gone, but the 'trap' takes in most of the broader politics and feels very personal, in a way a straight page to screen adaptation wouldn't.

Roll on part II (which is now confirmed)
