The full trailer for the upcoming Dune adaption by Denis Villeneuve ("Arrival", "Blade Runner 2049") has been released.



This is not exactly hard SciFi, but it is one of the classics of the genre. I'm certainly most excited about it!

This is one of the sillier complaints, so let's nip this one in the bud. Frank Herbert used both terms (see image), so this is nothing new. And don't make the mistake of accusing the film of leaving something out when you have only seen 3 minutes of trailer footage. The word "Jihad" may very well be used in the film, by the fremen.

Indeed, and maybe I just overreacted due to some reddit/twitter reactions about it... They don't call it "Jihad", movie ruined! We'll see how it is handled. Even if it is a search and replace, "crusade" means effectively the same thing - as Herbert uses it.

Post-9/11, “jihad” is charged with meaning for Americans. No reason not to substitute a synonym when the connotations of a word have changed for so many people since the original book.

Guess the director persuade Jason Momoa to reprise his facial looks from his Baywatch days. 

Doesn't matter he will have a glorious scene plus many more, since his character will go the Highlander route in the rest of the Dune novels. 


note - The first Dune novel with the first appearance of Duncan Idaho was published in 1965! So not bothering to put spoilers on this post.

This is maybe the first movie since Bladerunner 2049 that I am excited to see.  My summers as a kid & teenager were spent in the deserts of the American southwest, & during those years is when I read the first "Dune" book.  Every trip I have ever taken into the desert since those days humbles me.  It was & continues to have a spiritual connection to the landscape, as well as examination of my inner self.  And yes, it often reminds me of Paul Atreides & Arrakis that I read as a kid.

The trailer looks awesome! 

Side note: This past spring I was in the Rocky Mountains with my 8yr old son and we were by a stream with runoff coming right from the snowfields.  I challenged him to put his bare foot into the freezing cold water.  He was afraid, but did so & then started crying after 2-3 seconds.  After some hugs & 10 minutes to warm up his foot, he was all recovered.  I then explained to him that his mind has the power to overcome the fear & pain of the freezing water.  I challenged him to put his foot in the water again, but to focus his mind to ignore the pain & he did so for about 30 seconds, ( his foot was numb by then) but he shed no tears in spite of the pain.  He now  loves telling this story to him family & friends.  Thank you Frank Herbert!

Was that Dave Bautista in one shot? .. I don't know if I will be able to watch a scene with him in it without the image of him saying:
"Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it."

I'll always have a soft spot for Sting and Captain Picard, but I'm looking forward to seeing a proper adaptation on the big screen. At least, I hope it's proper. I didn't see anyone screaming at rocks, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The King is Timothée Chalamet doing a good proto-Paul I felt.  Don't think he's anything to worry about (and the rest of the cast also seems very well chosen).

I remember giving up any consideration of watching Ender's game when I saw the age of the cast.
 I think I got Dune as part of a Science Fiction book club 4 for $1.99 introductory offer a really long time ago. That club got half the money I had for half my childhood. The 35 cent paperback offers you found in the backs of Scifi books got the rest.

The kids playing Ender is really good. Not a great film though.

Although Timothée Chalamet looks young enough to play Paul he's actually in his mid twenties.   Pretty much how I was in my 20's, but somewhat less attractive.

Definitely a trailer designed to appeal to the masses, but it looks amazing. IMO. I'll be seeing this in theaters for sure.

I saw the new movie recently, and it certainly has some amazing visual scenes. I hadn't read Frank Herbert's novels, and had only previously seen the David Lynch movie back in the 80s. But whereas both movies are of similarly considerable length, this latest reboot movie covers less than half the story ground that Lynch's movie did. So we're left to await a sequel to get the rest of it. With the slower pacing used this time to give an in-depth look, I think they'd have been better off doing this in a big-budget TV series format, like Game of Thrones, since there's so much intrigue and intricacy to this storyline.
