Artemis & Other Spacecraft 3D Print Models
« on: 07/25/2020 09:32 pm »
I picked myself up a 3D printer and of course had to test it out with a few space models.

There are a few Artemis specific models out there, so far I've found Orion and the Dynetics lander.  I printed them each out at 1:88 scale (to match some model rockets I've built).

The Dynetics lander is a model that's geared towards kids but prints and assembles quite well. I tweaked the engine/tank section to separate them to gain some more colour contrast:

The Orion model here is fantastic with tons of detail. It was a little challenging to print at a smaller scale, I left out the maneuvering thrusters for now. The full model  also includes the ICPS:

Some other models that print well that I've also added to this little collection from this list and includes some below: https://all3dp.com/2/3d-printed-spacecraft-out-of-this-world-models/

Apollo 11 Lander: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-apollo-11-lunar-module-97789

Cygnus Enhanced: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1765830 -> I separated out the solar panels on this one and have files if anyone is interested.

I hope to do a cargo version of Dream Chaser, Gateway, and maybe Blue Moon but would be starting all the 3D models from scratch.

I own and operate a 3D printing store in Evergreen Colorado, American 3D Printing. In addition to the FH and F9/CD shown below, I have built a number of models for Sierra Nevada, who build satellites and Dream Chaser up in Louisville Colorado, about an hour's drive from here. My NDA with them prevents me from publicly showing pictures of them, but I do have a few of them displayed in my store. I've downloaded the Orion/ESM that GWH is showing above, but haven't built it yet. I'd like to build a SS/SH but it looks like I'll have to do the 3D modeling myself as I haven't seen any floating around (pardon the pun) on the interwebs. If I do, I'll give you all the heads up and link to the Thingiverse URL.

Shameless plug - in addition to 3D design and 3D printing, we also sell 3D printers and filament. Mention you're from NSF and I'll give you a discount.

Here is a lunar version of Starship. I haven't downloaded it myself to check it out: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4459279

There are some versions of SS/SH like this one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3889709
Seems like most modelers can't keep up to all the changes.

I can't bring myself to just printing one... would have too strong a desire to stick some engines in it and fly the sucker and that's a whole lot more effort.

I'm almost finished printing the "Crew Dragon (Model S)" from Morethan3d.com (https://morethan3d.com).  At 1/27 scale, it's about 29 cm long when finished (see ruler in pic).  It's taken about 2 weeks to print it all; the longest prints took about 18 hours on my Ender 3 Pro.  The nose cone opens to show the docking mechanism, and there's an interior.  I only need to print out the umbilical cover between the trunk and capsule, and a couple copies of the astronaut in SpaceX suit included the files.

The STLs cost 40 UK pounds (roughly $54 US); I've used the equivalent of about 1 roll of PLA filament and about $10 in neodymium magnets.  There's a free version with fewer features, but I've not investigated that.

This is a very well engineered model; it's mostly held together by friction and magnets, with a few drops of superglue (CA glue) needed in spots.  The capsule separates from the trunk, and the "top" comes off the capsule to show a simple interior (with control panel and reclining seats, of course).  I'm going to make waterslide decals for the markings using my color printer.  I might even install LEDs for the docking and interior lights at some point.  It wouldn't be too hard to print the control panel in clear PLA and use a couple of LEDs to light it, with some light-blocking paint on the "rear" side.

I've found a few X-37B models:
Here is a free and lo-fidelity version: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3366021
Then a $20 but highly detailed multi-piece model: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/various/x-37b-orbital-test-vehicle-tmatosc

The model creator above also has a Soyuz model that is probably the most detailed version available: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/various/soyuz-ms-spacecraft

EDIT: Here's a link to a new Dragon model from the same creator that's a lot cheaper than the one posted above. Looks very detailed. https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/various/dragon-crew-dm-2
