After trunk separation, if the main deorbit thrusters failed to work (the forward facing thrusters around the hatch), other thrusters could be used or possibly Dragon 2 makes an emergency return to ISS. If the attitude control thrusters also fail, a Starliner or another Dragon 2 present on ISS could try and mount a rescue mission, but it will be tricky without attitude control.

Rescue is not possible. The SpaceX docking system and the NDS Block 1 used by Starliner are not fully androgynous; Dragon/Starliner can dock to ISS but not to each other.

Never say never. It might require evacuating both capsules and a spacewalk by the rescued astronauts but it might be possible to rescue Dragon occupants by a Starliner.

No. Trust him on this one.
And neither Dragon nor Starliner is setup for EVA (the hatch it not designed for it, nor are the suits - they rely on the capsule for consumables)

Take regular EVA spacesuits with the Starliner. Everyone gets in IVA suits except one person in the Starliner who goes in an EVA suit. Depress the Starliner. If the capsule hatches can be opened (reversibly) in vacuum, then: Also Depress Dragon. The one EVA suited member moves the extra EVA suits into the Dragon. Repressurize the Dragon. The Dragon crew doffs their IVA suits and dons the EVA suits. Depress Dragon again. They all pile into the Starliner and go back to Station.

If the capsule hatch can only be destructively opened in vacuum, then the EVA suited person from the Starliner would have to somehow lash the capsules together and use the Starliner to push Dragon near Station. Another EVA astronaut on the end of a robot arm could grab the stack, lash the Dragon to the arm (or perhaps bond a fixture to the Dragon) and then use the arm to berth the Dragon to Station (I believe NDS has the capability of berthing?).

I mean, not much crazier than the other outlandish scenarios for rescuing stranded Shuttle astronauts...

This would make a decent plot for a Season 6 episode of For All Mankind. It's about the same distance from reality, anyway.

Yes it is. Shuttle had a REAL airlock. Neither Dragon nor Starliner does. So please let's stop polluting this thread with this and move it to a party thread.

And yet both are capable of depressurizing without the vehicle being completely destroyed. EVAs were done from capsules without airlocks in the past.

I’m only responding because you engaged me in the discussion, not just telling me to stop.

It absolutely is farcical. It’s also not much different than other farcical rescue options that were considered.

Locking as the thread has wandered. We need a new one for EOM and return anyway.
