MKremer - 19/3/2007  5:01 PM  I kind of liked the way they did that -  just a calm stop of the terminal count, and not quite as heart-stopping as hearing "Abort! Abort! Abort!".  They likely went through the same thing (full count without an actual launch) the other day with the engine test, so I'd just think of this (if they aren't able to recycle for another full count/launch today) as just another training exercise.
It was so calm that I wasn't even sure it was actually abort for about 20 seconds. :D

Having suffered through several aborts myself (live on console for a real rocket launch, not just online), I don't think the calm response was such a good thing.  As you say, you weren't sure it was actually an abort for about 20 seconds.  The purpose of repeating "abort, abort, abort" assertively and loudly is to make nobody misses the call and goes ahead and does something they shouldn't - at jsut the wrong time, that could result in a very bad day for everyone.

That was cool. Thanking the RCO for the supoprt today.

The term abort in this case is more akin to when the shuttle GLS calls an unplanned hold. The ignition sequence hadn't started yet, so it's more like a hold than abort from the perspective of a layman. In this case, the calmness I think was appropriate and professional. Just my opinion though.

At least this gave me a chance to practice with my shiney new streaming video recording software.  It worked perfectly!!   All recording systems go for next attempt!

I suspect that the IPO will net them a lot more money if they have a better track record.  Before IPO, they are very heavily restricted in how they can solicit investments which generally means that you need to be on the "happy side" of a net worth boundry that's somewhere over a million dollars.

Also, if their total value is above a certain point, Boeing or Lockheed Martin or whoever can't just buy them outright to make them go away.

I'd think if there were an IPO, Elon would still hold onto a controlling stake.

With all the whining over ULA, I'd seriously doubt the government would allow ULA to gobble up the only company that has a slim chance to compete with them...

Getting back on topic, Good Job to SpaceX for proving that their fancy new launch control system can detect problems that the operators might have missed. Hurray for progress!

Simon ;)

Chris, reference your lead story:- the abort occurred well before the countdown clock stopped.  I would say at approximately T-1m30.

Yes. It was announced just shortly before the webcast concluded.

Yeah, I'm checking. On the media call they said they are calling it T-62 seconds, but I'll keep checking and change if required.

One question:
Are they still using the velcro blanket and lanyard insulation technique, like they did on the first launch?

I remember right after the first flight failure, that was one of the first theories about what happened. I also remember my first post in this forum was about that.  :)

Does anybody know enough about their processing to know if radio checks are a part of their pre-launch  check-outs?
