This sure didn’t look norminal, near first stage MECO. #Starlink

Elon: Yeah. There was also an early engine shutdown on ascent, but it didn’t affect orbit insertion. Shows value of having 9 engines! Thorough investigation needed before next mission.

The #SpaceX Falcon 9 blasts off Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A this morning, where Apollo 11 once launched to the moon. It was the first Starlink launch from the historic pad.

Last launch aborted due to slightly high power. Possibly, but not obviously, related to today. This vehicle has seen a lot of wear, so today isn’t a big surprise. Life leader rockets are used only for internal missions. Won’t risk non-SpaceX satellites.

Today’s Falcon 9 launch was the second time SpaceX has re-flown a full payload fairing. After landing in the water, both fairing halves were quickly recovered.

Engine-out event at 1:38 into this video. Not many good tracking views as of yet.

To me the flash looked very abrupt with a quick tailoff, contrast it to the normal shutdown at 1:53 (and remember that the F9 engine shutdown is staggered in pairs so while the first pair is shutting down, the rest are still burning then a few 10s of ms later the 2nd pair of engines is shut down, etc.).

I'm not sure I completely buy the graceful shutdown and venting theory Scott Manley speculated on in one of his twitter posts. Unless an off-nominal, abrupt shutdown produces a different signature which I'll grant is possible.

Better resolution of Red's Rhetoric video here:

The Event (TM) occurs at 3:51 into the video.

It's definitely off the centerline (so much so that in this vantage point it appears as the flame came around the 2nd stage) so I think we can eliminate the center engine from the consideration.
