Re: CZ-8 – the world's second reusable orbital rocket
« Reply #20 on: 10/06/2020 08:30 pm »
The CZ-8 fly this year should be 3.35m “single stick” without boosters and recovery hardwares.
The reusable version is called CZ-8A with two fixed boosters. In the long term maybe changing from YF-100 to lighter 100K can save enough mass and space for 2 YF-115 to form a more efficient RLV.

CZ-8 will make its maiden flight at the end of this year, and it is not single stick rocket(2* 2.25m boosters and 3.35 core stage). The recovery model is CZ-8R, which is likely to achieve reusability in 2025. CZ-8A program is not even been approved yet, especially they already have CZ-7A and plans for improving its performances to 8t+ GTO in Xichang, and its required 2nd stage engine would mostly likely take a very long time to be ready.

On October 27, the CZ-8 Y1 vehicle has been transported from Qinglan Port to Wenchang Space Launch Site.
First launch is planned at the end of December 2020.

Apparently the main payload on board will be a certain "XJY-7" mentioned once before in official news (see mission logo).

Belated cross-post:
BTW per CAST's newly formed remote-sensing satellites department they have a lot more than just GF-13 to launch within the next few months, per an article on them working through the national day holidays:
<snip>
- An "XJY-7" just finished all works in CAST's Beijing plant and is on schedule for delivery to launch site.

CZ-6,7,8,ZQ-2 Families (not officially confirmed) will use this LC and ML as the core stage launch mount/reaction frame interfaces are identical and fuel umbilicals are interchangeable.

With the delay into 2021 of the Yaogan-31 Group 02 launch, this launch is the next and last Chinese orbital launch.
