This is alarming traditional providers in regional areas, and jeopardising their very viability. Now, Australia only has 25 million people, of which 17 million live in the capital cities. Industry estimates are that the traditional addressable market for regional satellite internet is about 400,000 premises. This market might increase given Starlink’s offering, but as it stands, if Starlink was able to jump to 100,000 subscribers already, well, they really have no competition.People in the cities will have high-speed internet, it's the rural people that need it the most. They don't want to run fiber, Starlink can bridge that gap.Correct. But there is a traditional rural National Broadband satellite service with about 100,000 subscribers which is now being threatened by Starlink. The service provides about 25Mb/s download and 5Mb/s upload speed for a capped amount of data per month.Starlink is eroding its customer base fast and will continue to do so.

Cook Islands Competition and Regulatory Authority chair, Bernard Hill, said Starlink wanted to enter the Cook Islands "as soon as they can"....Vanuatu's telecommunication regulator was also working in collaboration with Starlink to get the company a licence to operate....In Vanuatu people are already using Starlink despite the company not being approved to operate. The country's telecommunication regulator earlier this month warned that any of the company's equipment brought into the country would be confiscated until it gets a licence. The regulator's competition and consumer affairs manager, Roger Jimmy, said people were using the service illegally. "We have a number of people who told us they're using Starlink and at the moment we're working closely with the customs department to inspect all of the equipment entering the country," Jimmy said. He said Starlink did not know how this could have happened. "They told us that they have no idea of what's going on or why people are bringing their devices to Vanuatu. It seems people possess this from either from New Zealand or Australia and bring it to Vanuatu."
Anglo-Eastern, one of the world’s largest shipmanagers, has made the biggest on the record investment in Starlink at sea to date. The Hong Kong-based manager has earmarked at least 200 installations of Elon Musk’s new satellite communication system across its fleet by year-end....“We quietly started our journey a year ago, when Starlink first announced its RV service. Once installed on several vessels, we knew immediately it was a game-changer,” said Torbjorn Dimblad, chief information officer of Anglo-Eastern. “Overnight, these ships became as connected as any office or home, affording the crew unprecedented access to friends and family while enabling an entirely new level of collaboration between ship and shore.”...“The elusive promise of the connected vessel has finally arrived,” a press release from Anglo-Eastern concluded.A host of cruise companies as well as Japan’s two largest shipping lines are among the early sign-ups to Starlink, which started marketing to maritime customers around nine months ago.

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — The Air Force is using commercial Starlink satellites to communicate with airmen dispersed across the vast Indo-Pacific, officials said this week at the home of U.S. Forces Japan. The 730th Air Mobility Squadron showed off one of three recently acquired Starlink terminals during a visit Monday by the Air Force Expeditionary Center’s commander, Maj. Gen. John Klein.
A Starlink terminal set up inside a C-130J Super Hercules airlifter at Yokota allowed Klein to video conference with an airman who was using a Starlink terminal on Diego Garcia, an island more than 5,000 miles away in the Indian Ocean.
“I was extremely impressed with the capability,” he told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday as he prepared to depart Yokota. “We are looking to give our units throughout the Pacific the ability to communicate with command-and-control entities. They are evolving to do that in support of agile combat employment.”
Starlink works with the Air Force’s secure internet routers used for secret communication, he said. The Air Force has its own satellite internet system called Hawkeye that’s a lot more expensive and slower, Flores added. A Hawkeye dish costs $250,000 and provides internet speeds of 4 megabytes per second, he said.

The lead page says "as low as" $250 a month but does not mention speed or bandwidth cap with that. The $2500 equipment fee actually sounds rather reasonable for maritime gear. Disclaimer: I am not a boater, but have friends and family who do and I get to hear them complain about the expense of every thing that has to live salt water adjacent...
