https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/elon-musk-s-starlink-nears-100-000-australian-customers-20230223-p5cn23.html

Article from the Sydney Morning Herald might be paywalled, but in summary, it shares an update from a confidential industry meeting that Starlink now has 95,000 Australian subscribers and is growing fast. This is alarming traditional providers in regional areas, and jeopardising their very viability.

Now, Australia only has 25 million people, of which 17 million live in the capital cities. Industry estimates are that the traditional addressable market for regional satellite internet is about 400,000 premises. This market might increase given Starlink’s offering, but as it stands, if Starlink was able to jump to 100,000 subscribers already, well, they really have no competition.
People in the cities will have high-speed internet, it's the rural people that need it the most.  They don't want to run fiber, Starlink can bridge that gap.

Correct. But there is a traditional rural National Broadband satellite service with about 100,000 subscribers which is now being threatened by Starlink. The service provides about 25Mb/s download and 5Mb/s upload speed for a capped amount of data per month.

Starlink is eroding its customer base fast and will continue to do so.

I applaud the replacement of $SERVICE-A with a new superior service $SERVICE-B.    It's good to celebrate the positive benefits of new products and services

Starlink high-speed internet could reach the remotest islands

Quote
Cook Islands Competition and Regulatory Authority chair, Bernard Hill, said Starlink wanted to enter the Cook Islands "as soon as they can".
...
Vanuatu's telecommunication regulator was also working in collaboration with Starlink to get the company a licence to operate.
...
In Vanuatu people are already using Starlink despite the company not being approved to operate. The country's telecommunication regulator
earlier this month warned that any of the company's equipment brought into the country would be confiscated until it gets a licence.
The regulator's competition and consumer affairs manager, Roger Jimmy, said people were using the service illegally. "We have
a number of people who told us they're using Starlink and at the moment we're working closely with the customs department to inspect
all of the equipment entering the country," Jimmy said. He said Starlink did not know how this could have happened. "They told us that
they have no idea of what's going on or why people are bringing their devices to Vanuatu. It seems people possess this from either
from New Zealand or Australia and bring it to Vanuatu."

‘As connected as any office or home’: Anglo-Eastern gives rave Starlink review

Quote
Anglo-Eastern, one of the world’s largest shipmanagers, has made the biggest on the record investment in Starlink at sea to date.

The Hong Kong-based manager has earmarked at least 200 installations of Elon Musk’s new satellite communication system across its fleet by year-end.
...
“We quietly started our journey a year ago, when Starlink first announced its RV service. Once installed on several vessels, we knew immediately it was a game-changer,” said Torbjorn Dimblad, chief information officer of Anglo-Eastern. “Overnight, these ships became as connected as any office or home, affording the crew unprecedented access to friends and family while enabling an entirely new level of collaboration between ship and shore.”
...
“The elusive promise of the connected vessel has finally arrived,” a press release from Anglo-Eastern concluded.

A host of cruise companies as well as Japan’s two largest shipping lines are among the early sign-ups to Starlink, which started marketing to maritime customers around nine months ago.

Unclear whether this should be in the at war thread, but here is an article from Stars and Stripes regarding testing of Starlink.  The military alternatives are super slow and super expensive.

Quote
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — The Air Force is using commercial Starlink satellites to communicate with airmen dispersed across the vast Indo-Pacific, officials said this week at the home of U.S. Forces Japan.

The 730th Air Mobility Squadron showed off one of three recently acquired Starlink terminals during a visit Monday by the Air Force Expeditionary Center’s commander, Maj. Gen. John Klein.
Quote
A Starlink terminal set up inside a C-130J Super Hercules airlifter at Yokota allowed Klein to video conference with an airman who was using a Starlink terminal on Diego Garcia, an island more than 5,000 miles away in the Indian Ocean.
Quote
“I was extremely impressed with the capability,” he told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday as he prepared to depart Yokota. “We are looking to give our units throughout the Pacific the ability to communicate with command-and-control entities. They are evolving to do that in support of agile combat employment.”
Quote
Starlink works with the Air Force’s secure internet routers used for secret communication, he said.

The Air Force has its own satellite internet system called Hawkeye that’s a lot more expensive and slower, Flores added. A Hawkeye dish costs $250,000 and provides internet speeds of 4 megabytes per second, he said.

Surprisingly, at least one step for Starlink was approved in Pakistan.  It is unclear to me whether there are other hurdles, such as landing rights.

According to Detikcom (a top 10 visited website in Indonesia) Starlink is licensed and now provides backhaul service in Indonesia. Autotranslated:

Quote
After receiving approval from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), Starlink has now provided internet access in Indonesian territory. Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers ( APJII ) Muhammad Arif revealed that internet service providers who are members of APJII can utilize Starlink as an internet backhaul network for their customers.

Lukman Hakim Abd. Rauf as the CEO of Telkomsat, said that the collaboration with Starlink has increased Telkomsat's bandwidth capacity very significantly. "Telkomsat will not sell bandwidth to end-users . Telkomsat's target in providing services is to cellular operators and ISP companies. So we hope that Telkomsat can become an integral part of the business of APJII members in deploying telecommunications infrastructure in Indonesia," he concluded.

If the peeringdb info is up-to-date Starlink does not exchange traffic in Indonesia but I guess Telkomsat leased or provided their own fiber lines from the ground stations to a Starlink POP which passes IP traffic to Telkomsat AS56241.

Telkomsat website features a Starlink ground station photo with photoshopped  ;D Telkomsat logos on Starlink radomes. Link to the full image.

Well this should make the small(er) boat people here happier, depending on the caps per price point.

Has anyone drilled down to find the actual prices for service? The lead page says "as low as" $250 a month but does not mention speed or bandwidth cap with that.

The $2500 equipment fee actually sounds rather reasonable for maritime gear.

Disclaimer: I am not a boater, but have friends and family who do and I get to hear them complain about the expense of every thing that has to live salt water adjacent...

Here's the cost. Also I believe it's a dual antenna system which means double the power requirements which is always an issue for smaller boats.

Nice to see the cost come down and SpaceX still allow boaters to use the RV/Global offering at sea even though it's contrary to their t&c

Any recent updates on total Starlink subscriber numbers? I haven’t checked in a while but believe it crossed ~1M around the end of 2022?

You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great. That's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and believing the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.

Very interesting and impressive comparison of latest speeds:

https://www.ookla.com/articles/starlink-hughesnet-viasat-performance-q1-2023

In short - Starlink blowing the competition out of the water, and spreading across the world - and that’s before V2 even starts having an impact.
