Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) signs deal with SpaceX for Starlink internet

Quote from: driveteslacanada.ca
SpaceX has secured another major cruise line as a customer as Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has signed an agreement to provide Starlink internet onboard its cruise ships.

We first reported on the possibility of NCL signing with SpaceX back in November when a passenger on the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway spotted nearly a dozen Starlink Flat High Performance dishes. Drive Tesla reached out to NCL for confirmation, with the company replying they had no information to share at that time.

While NCL still hasn’t announced anything officially, it looks like a little over two months later the company is all set to begin providing Starlink internet to its passengers. The information comes from Cruise Critic forum member ‘the more ports the better’ who is currently cruising on the Oceania Riveria. According to the user the cruise line’s internet department confirmed with him during a meeting that testing has been completed and the contracts have been signed for Starlink deployment across their entire fleet.

SpaceX Starlink Coming to Airstream and Other THOR Industries RVs

Quote from: teslanorth.com
Indiana-based THOR Industries announced on Tuesday it has entered into an agreement with SpaceX to integrate Starlink flat high-performance dishes into select motorized recreational vehicles (RVs) in the U.S. and across the THOR family of companies in 2023.

THOR says its family of companies are the first RV OEMs to work with SpaceX to integrate Starlink flat high-performance dishes. This includes companies like Airstream, Entegra Coach, Jayco and Tiffin, where select motorized RVs will get an option to add Starlink.

We've tested Starlink in a @COLDEX_STC Antarctic field camp & @NSF is now testing at McMurdo Station (pop. 800+)! Exciting to see how this & other modes of high-speed connectivity can advance our communication & might alter how we do science on the ice!

I talked to someone successfully using Starlink for Arctic and Antarctic work, including for long-term unmanned sensors.

Apparently, they even talked SpaceX into providing modified firmware that emphasize upload connectivity (little need for downloads at unmanned sensors).

Curious if they dropped a ground station in French Guinea... or they are hoping through ISL to the ground stations in Brazil.

What’s stopping the major international airlines from signing up to Starlink en masse?

Was recently on a long distance Emirates flight and would sure have loved Starlink while flying between Dubai and Australia.

Does Starlink have continuous global coverage for most or all Emirates routes yet? Most over-ocean locations require ISL.

Assuming the STCs (and any international equivalents) are all completed for the various a/c types each airline flies, it still requires downtime to install the antenna atop the fuselage, plus any interior power & signal cable routing, and crew instrumentation … plus even more effort if they don't already have WiFi in the cabin.
Working for SX could be exhilarating, as long as the job description doesn't include Master PERT Chart.

Just a side note: I’m amazed by how quickly the ISLs have gone from “an interesting and challenging engineering project, almost no flown examples” to “backbone of a huge communications network”.

Experiences of people using StarLink in Antarctica (McMurdo I believe), posted on reddit r/antarctica: The pre- and post-Starlink effect on station.

As with anything on reddit, these are unverified accounts, but looks genuine enough, the experience is very positive: "starlink has been AMAZING", "the single best thing to happen to McMurdo in years", "I sent a lonely family member a video message, and I've never seen their face light up like that. "...

It looks like Starlink's business case has more or less officially closed financially ...

Windstar Cruises adds SpaceX Starlink Wi-Fi

Quote from: driveteslacanada.ca
SpaceX is quickly taking over the cruise industry, with the latest cruise line operator Windstar Cruises announcing they are adding Starlink internet to their fleet of cruise ships.

Windstar Cruises says they have already launched Starlink on-board Wi-Fi to their Star Pride ship during a recent voyage in the Caribbean. The company plans to offer Starlink on all of their ships by mid-2023, with the Star Legend next to receive the high-speed, low latency satellite internet service this spring, followed by the Wind Surf, Wind Star, and Star Breeze.
