S. Korea To Pick First Astronaut In September
SEOUL, June 25 Asia Pulse - South Korea will pick its first astronaut in September based on a comprehensive evaluation of two hopefuls undergoing training in Russia, the government said Monday.
The final selection will be determined by aptitude shown during the last stage of training, which began in earnest in March, and ability to conduct experiments in space, the Ministry of Science and Technology said.
It said the overall scores during the initial selection process that kicked off in April 2006 will also be considered.
The astronaut is to be sent into space in April 2008 on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, and spend 7-8 days in orbit at the International Space Station.
"The candidate selected will become a member of the primary team, while the other will be kept as the back-up member," said a ministry spokesman.
Ko San, a researcher at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, and Yi So-yeon, a doctoral candidate at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science, were picked from 36,206 applicants on Dec. 25. Both are currently at Russia's Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.
In addition, the ministry said Russian experts are to provide input on how well Ko and Yi have adapted during the final stage that includes Russian language courses, aerospace engineering and basic space training.
