I think that would be a really bad thing if these guys were not considered fit by the commission. Very unlikely though.

According to the Korean news agencies today, the two Korean candidates will stay in Russia for a further week. They were due to go home on 24th January, but this is put back to 1st February.
The reason is given, that they have both had colds since arriving in Russia last week, and this has affected their ability to complete the medical and physical tests required satisfactorily.
Bearing in mind the high standards the Russians require of cosmonaut candidates, this doesn't sound like particularly good news for the Koreans.
I wonder if they have any 'reserves' among the remaining four finalists ?

So now we can start wondering about the third seat of Soyuz TMA-13 in the fall of 2008:
- expedition crew
- visiting ESA astronaut
- first citizen in space for a new space faring nation
- spaceflight participant
I heard rumour today that it will be spaceflight participant ("space tourist")... His name will be announced by Space Adventures soon... He is from United States and his medical examination at GCTC is planned in April or May 2007...

Another rich American? *Yawn* Russia seems to be launching everyone but their own professional cosmonauts!

You may be right, Suzy,
Looking at the Soyuz flight crews during the last 5 years, you will find only two flights (TMA-1 and TMA-5) with more than one russian crew member...

I'm sorry if this goes "against the grain", but I find that them launching paying customers is "an accomplishment in itself". That provides the reason d'atre (pardon the French) for a whole lot of activity in space.

"raison d'ętre"

It is rather bad for the morale of the professional cosmonauts, though - some are still waiting for their first flight after 10 years or so, while amateurs get to go up after only a year or so of training! Perhaps the RSA should rename itself the Russian Space
Tourist Agency - that is all they seem to be doing now.

Both South Korean candidates have arrived to Russia on February 27... Yesterday they began three-day medical examination, because they had some minor problems during the first medical examination in January... The Russian Main Medical Commission (GMK) should admit them to preparation to spaceflight on March 6...

Once the ISS 6 person crew capability is in place, there should be 4 Soyuzes sent to ISS per year, giving double the seats to Russian cosmonauts. That should happen in 2009. Hopefully.

According to
http://www.rian.ru/technology/cosmos/20070307/61679503.html (in Russian), two South Korean candidates have began the training at GCTC today... The basic stage of their preparation will begin in April 2007, when they will start the studying systems of Soyuz TMA spacecraft... There are also planned two trainings at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in August and in December 2007 and the week preparation at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in January 2008...
