MOCR Apollo 11 model
« on: 07/08/2019 08:00 pm »
When watching "Apollo 11" I noticed a model of the Apollo spacecraft sitting a top a console in Mission Control.  I quickly recognized that it was a vintage 1/96 Revell model on a custom base.  I decided I wanted to build one.  I took screen caps and sought out help from collectSPACE.  They found out that INCO Tom Hanchett built the model to help him determine which antennas the crew would use for their communications.

I built my model using one of the newly rereleased Revell kits and hardware from Lowes, a craft store and a custom base I had made up.  Labels were printed with label tape just like the original model, or as close to it as I could determine from photos.

The model was a simple build.  Just constructed and painted white.  The LM had no other paint added but the CSM had a bit more decals.  The CSM was seen in the Apollo 8 control room, so it must have just had the LM attached at a later time.

That’s very cool Ron! I’ve built that kit before but not as neat a display.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

I remembered an Apollo-Soyuz in linked configuration above a world globe in Russian Tsup control center during the July 1975 ASTP mission. Nice little gems if You ask me  8)

How about offering it to the restored Mission Control room? I think they'd be happy to have it!

I thought of that, but they got this guy to build them one.  This is flight controller Tom Hanchett who re-built his own model.  He sent me this photo after he saw mine.
