Guess what I found in a local hobby shop recently? Yes Revell-Monogram (NOT Revell-Germany) reissued the 1/48 First Lunar Landing kit that had been issued after Neil and Buzz stepped on the surface. (Not the same as the R-G ex Dragon kit, and cheaper too). I got started and have made strong progress on the descent stage.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

For anybody wanting to do a 50th anniversary model, this kit is not only cheaper, but also more accurate than the Dragon kit.  There’s a set of resin and photoetch upgrades available from New Ware Models.  Sometimes, culttvmanshop.com has that set in stock in the US, and he’ll be getting some of the reissued LM kits also.

Nice! I made that kit in the 1980s and still have it. Had to rebuild it years ago after one of my old cats knocked it to the floor. I have the Franklin Mint 1/48 LM the last ten years and I love that. I have an unmade Airfix 1/72 kit somewhere. I realize that one is low on details, so I just keep it as a collectable.

My first entry to my elementary school's science fair (1967, fourth grade) was a paper-mache moonscape about 16 inches on a side with a LEM placed on it.  It was a Monogram or Revell model, I don't remember which.  It was rather smaller than the model above.

Got a blue ribbon for that.

Just wondering what glue do you use to stick the foil to the model.

In this kit the foil has a sticky back that seems to work well for now. If I have to use glue I’m pretty sure I’ll use a liquid cement (Tamiya or Squadron).

By the way here’s the ascent stage as of this morning.

In this kit the foil has a sticky back that seems to work well for now. If I have to use glue I’m pretty sure I’ll use a liquid cement (Tamiya or Squadron).

Those glues will not do anything to the foil, the solvents only work on styrene plastic.  There are inexpensive “tacky glues” available at any arts & crafts store, I’ve bought some at Michaels by the DIY “gold leafing” supplies.  Paint it on both surfaces using a cheap brush (disposable is best, the stuff doesn’t dissolve well for clean-up), wait about 10 minutes, then the foil sticks nicely to the plastic.  MicroScale makes (made?) a metal foil adhesive for models, a tiny bottle is enough for years.  In a pinch, superglue applied carefully with a toothpick will hold down the edges of foils if you need. Elmer’s won’t work because it can’t dry under the foil (lesson learned the hard way long ago).

You’re off to a great start on that model!

The LEM as of tonight, big progress on the descent stage. Ascent stage has silver paint, but I will mask and paint the greenish aluminum and black areas soon.

You are moving right along there!  Here is mine I did a few years ago.  I picked up two kits for future projects.  And yes, I kept the shadows.  To me, they are a big parts of the photos you see on the mission and very nostalgic to me, since my first kit had them.

Very nice!

How did you mask the shadowed area?

I painted the base black first and then covered everything  that stayed in shadow.  I then painted the rest grey.  And as luck would have it, I found a vintage first issue kit with the pre-painted shadows a few months later.  I still won't to switch everything to the original base.

The LEM ascent stage tonight, with silver and anodized aluminum (Tamiya Silver Leaf and IJN Gray Green) areas masked off, ready for the black pyromark coat
