New book coming about tracking Soviet satellites
« on: 06/30/2019 08:01 am »
Sven Grahn has just posted on his Facebook site that he has a book coming out around October which will look back at his - and other Kettering Group members' - sleuthing of the Soviet space programme.   Title is "Dawn, This is Golden Eagle".

The blurb on the back of the book says:

"If you want to read about another person’s obsession this is a book for you. It recounts how I and a band of friends in Sweden and abroad listened to signals from satellites from the secretive Soviet Union and other nations throughout the Cold War years and beyond. You will read about how we kept a watch on cosmonauts and secret satellites using simple equipment – always on ”the trailing edge of technology”.

Richard Flagg, Robert Christy and Mark Severance have contributed chapters that provide their perspective on our common obsession. We were all part of the Kettering Group of satellite trackers led by the legendary Geoff Perry."

I wonder will this have more information on the "lost cosmonauts" from the early 1960'smissions reported lost in orbit?

No, it will be dealing with the facts of the Soviet space programme, not fairy tales made up by nutters and publicity-seekers.

I was sure that I had posted something about this when the book was announced a few months ago but I cannot find the thread: maybe it was deleted for some reason.

Anyway, yesterday Amazon.co.uk delivered my copy of the book "Dawn, this is Golden Eagle: Listening to Soviet cosmonauts and secret satellites by radio": the link to it on Amazon is https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/9188823164/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have just posted the following on my Facebook page:

"Yesterday I received a copy of Sven Grahn's book about the tracking of Soviet/Russian and Chinese satellites. When I ordered this from Amazon I was told that it might take up to three months to arrive but in truth it came after only a couple of weeks.  An excellent book, telling the story of sleuthing the Soviet/Russian and Chinese space programmes from the 1960s (when everything was secret) through to recent times. For me the good thing is that the text is larger than normal and so I can actually read the book! Essential reading."
