Moonraker 40th Anniversary
« on: 06/27/2019 08:05 am »
I've just been reminded that today marks the 40th anniversary of the world premiere of the James Bond movie, MOONRAKER! The MI6-HQ website includes some great pictures from the event, including a model space shuttle being driven around Leicester Square on top of a transit van:

Fantastic John Barry score, though.  The original recording session tapes aren’t available, but the album master tapes still exist, and the remastered soundtrack is available on iTunes.

I’ve been toying with doing a model in 1/144 scale, with flyback boosters, as Musk— I mean, Drax, would have wanted.

It actually brings up an interesting question for the James Bond franchise. When they have cast a new actor in the role (Richard Madden?) will they make the series a full or a 'soft reboot'? And with Commercial space now a fact and getting bigger in the near future - would a remake of 'Moonraker' be either feasible or desirable?

When 'Moonraker' was released in 1979 it was extremely far fetched. Now in the year of the 50th Anniversaries for Apollo? Not so much... In fact - I'm getting enthusiastic about the idea. Anyone got Barbara Broccoli's email address? ;)

One of the names I read that might be the next Bond is Tom Hiddleston (aka Loki in Marvel Cinematic Universe). He would bring in a different audience to the Bond franchise.

A Moonraker remake based on the likeness of SX and BO flight hardware will be interesting.

Movie premise a race to set up the first Moon base with espionage intrigues among the contestants from governments, corporations & eccentric Billionaires.

The current favourite for next Bond appears to be Richard Madden. But in six months time it will probably have changed to someone else.

Don’t get too excited about Tom Hiddleston. A while back, he was seen having lunch with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes, and people automatically put two and two together. In fact, they were discussing a completely separate project. If anything, Hiddleston’s star has fallen in recent times. Barbara Broccoli was apparently unimpressed with his much-publicised affair with singer Taylor Swift. That was a huge tabloid story over here in the UK. Although Hiddleston shouldn’t be discounted, his chances of being the next James Bond are now seen as slim.

And don't expect to see MOONRAKER remade - not under the same title, anyway. That's not to say that the basic plot will get recycled at some point in the future (it probably will!). Eon will just use a different title.

The possibilities for a future "Moonraker" are ripe.  We have had many ASAT tests since 1979.  Now we have spooky lurking satellites out there that follow other satellites, etc.  "Space Force" is maybe a thing.  Etc.

Or, how about a real "Moonraker" that involves a journey to the Moon, since, after all, NASA will be there by 2024, right?

It would help if UK had a bigger space program for Bond to protect!

I do hope it changes to someone else. I thought he showed very little charisma as either Robb Stark or in the Bodyguard.  He'd be a bland Bond like Lazenby or Dalton.

Some people, including my Wife, thought Daniel Craig was bland as Bond at first. And Tim Dalton was far from bland! Go watch his films again. Like many people; you may not have seen them in 30 years.
