Perhaps they discover that large amounts of iridium are useful for some key technology.

Well season 3 (or was it season 2 ?) imagined a lunar conflict related to He3. Doesn't makes more sense than that iridum thing. But it's a TV show, so - suspension of disbelief, etc. etc.
Not He3 but rather lithium which is used alot in batteries. The mine site that was in contention (356/B) was very rich in lithium which was a big thing as by S2 the western world had made a near complete transition to fusion based energy generation and was using electrical batteries rather than fossil fuels.

S3 was all about Mars with a side-story about the Jamestown Crisis being a cover-up which lead to the bombing of JSC at the end of S3.
"For Sardines, space is no problem!"
-1996 Astronaut class slogan

"We're rolling in the wrong direction but for the right reasons"
-USA engineer about the rollback of Discovery prior to the STS-114 Return To Flight mission

Quote
Understanding Iridium
Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant metal on Earth. It is extremely difficult to melt, and because of its high melting point, it is hard to form, machine, or work iridium.

It is also one of the rarest elements in Earth's crust. The huge asteroid that many scientists believe wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago is also believed to be responsible for the thin layer of iridium-rich clay found around Earth.

...

Applications of Iridium
Iridium’s very high melting point makes it useful in many industrial applications, like the construction of high-grade spark plugs used in general aviation aircraft. Manufacturers also use it in the construction of crucibles, or containers for melting and manipulating other industrial metals. Iridium crucibles have most recently helped manufacture sapphire crystals, which require temperatures above 3,711 degrees F. Given that iridium’s melting point is 4,435 degrees F, pure iridium performs well at the temperatures required.
1

Manufacturers also combine iridium with osmium to make fountain pen nibs, and to construct pivot bearings and other scientific and specialized equipment.

Iridium has become an important component in the manufacture of LED screens and backlit displays of technology devices, such as iPads and iPhones. This has led to a surge in demand for the metal and sent its price skyrocketing. After Apple released its first iPad in 2010, iridium prices rose to over $1,000 per troy ounce. After a brief fall in 2013, iridium prices continued to rise, reaching nearly $4,900 per troy ounce in March 2022.

...

With an average price of $4,900 per troy ounce in March 2022, iridium is more valuable than gold, silver, or platinum.

Unobtainium is valuable due to its scarcity relative to demand for it. If the Unobtainium is suddenly available in abundance - say because you suddenly found a whole asteroid full of it - then its price would automatically crash. At that point, you're just left with distributing it and making practical use out of it to the fullest extent possible.

Well, if you found an asteroid-load of Unobtainium somewhere you'd need to call it something else, since, technically speaking, it's no longer unobtainable..  :P
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine - however, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are
going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead.

As a technical consultant on @forallmankind_ I often  deliver bad news, like the fact that asteroids spin and docking a space tug-boat to one is difficult. But sometimes these challenges turn into beautiful opportunities for our very talented cast and crew. Watch now on @AppleTV

Apple's great For All Mankind is back, and back on track, with a fourth season that moves past the Danny Stevens debacle to focus on the business of space travel. My review:

That Rolling Stone review has so many details of what happens during this season I had to stop reading halfway through. I hope I can share the reviewer’s positive spin on the season as I watch week to week. After watching S4E1 I’m not super optimistic, but it’s too soon to tell. That being said, Coral Pena + the wonderful score make this worth my time regardless of any perceived plot miscues.

As long as the series starts with a note saying that this happened to Danny, I'll be happy:

OMG that is funny. I just watched that Simpson's episode last week. Can they show Danny about to speak then freeze frame him with his mouth open, while having someone else's voice speak for him...

Just watched the new season eps that are out so far, I was right about Gore being president (which wasn't hard to predict anyway). Danny Stevens is in jail apparently but got a plea deal so he was sentenced to 13 years or something.

OK why does it seem that some people have seen E4 when it's not available to me until next Friday?

Wrong country?

Licensing agreements differ from country to country, hence the popularity of foreign VPNs to watch streamed shows.

Those patches are very impressive. Looks like a great assignment for one of the show's art directors. Tons of imagination and creativity shown there.

Finished the season earlier today. I liked how things ended up, even though there were some dark outcomes for some of the characters.

I'm a little frustrated. I was hoping The Expanse - like big fireworks, because of asteroid thing in the last episodes. Oh well...
