Prediction based on the latest Apple Season 2 teaser......Cold War-wise, it’s all going horribly wrong until a CME event forces the two opposing sides on the Moon to rely on each other - an expanded Zvezda base has built further on their subterranean structure started in Season 1 and this becomes the shelter “For all Mankind” who are on the Moon at the time.......????

'For All Mankind: Time Capsule' app augments alt space race series

February 11, 2020

— A new augmented reality app serves as a bridge between the first and second seasons of "For All Mankind," the Apple TV+ alternate space history series that explores what might have changed if the Soviets were the first to land a cosmonaut on the moon.

In "For All Mankind: Time Capsule," now available through the Apple App Store, users can piece through a virtual box of personal mementos belonging to Danny Stevens (played by Casey Johnson), the son of astronauts Gordo and Tracy Stevens (Michael Dorman and Sarah Jones). The app uses the iPhone's or iPad's camera to make it look as if Danny's items are in the user's own setting, such that they sit on a real desk or are inside the same room as the user.

Episode 1 of season 2 is up.

Not to spoil it, but if you're a Shuttle hugger, you'll enjoy some of the visuals in this one.

I didn't see a shuttle, did I miss something? Or are you referring to the alt universe mission planning boards and mission patches?

Anyway - I really enjoyed the season 2 opening.  8) Some really excellent visual effects work in the last 15 mins as well. This show looks great.

And nice to see all the alternate universe details they put into that opening segment explaining the last decade.

Did I just spot Dutch astronaut Wubbo Ockels, on the lunar surface, in season 2?

(Dutch flag on the suit and the moustache is there)

There's a Shuttle docked to Skylab.

I hope they'll have time to show the commercial operations implied in the first episode, growing silicon crystal (?), lunar mining, etc. Also can't wait to see Pathfinder, I wonder which 2nd generation Shuttle concept they used for that...

Yes it's definitely Ockels, he was referred to by name a few times and "Ockles" is one of the names on his mission patch.

KINDA SORTA SPOLIERS AHEAD
I went though the opening sequence of S2E1 and the clips on Apple TV a few times and put together (to the best of my abilities) a timeline of events between S1 and S2, for anyone who may be interested.
AGAIN, POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

-1976: Reagan defeats Ted Kennedy and is elected 39th POTUS. The election is extremely close and comes down to a long and drawn out 2000 Florida recount situation in Ohio, with Reagan coming out on top. Senator Richard Schweiker is his running mate and is therefore elected Vice President.

-1977: US scraps space treaty after multiple Soviet infringements, by the timeline it looks like this was possibly done by President Kennedy in the final days of his administration. NASA makes the first Mars landing this year with Mars Pathfinder type mission. Sea Dragon also makes its first flight this year, increasing US dependence on the Panama Canal, which Sea Dragon uses to get from KSC to the Pacific.

-1978: Camp David accords never signed. Roman Polansky arrested trying to flee to Canada. Space themed movies like "Close encounters of the third kind" and "Star Wars" do considerably better at that years Oscars than they did in real life.

-1979: Soviet Union doesn't invade Afghanistan, citing need to focus resources on space race. Three Mile Island meltdown averted using technology developed for use on Jamestown Base. President Reagan doesn't bailout Chrysler like Carter did. I assume sometime around here Skylab is saved.

-1980: Iran Hostage Crisis ended using military action, I'm assuming a successful version of Operation Eagle Claw. Ronald Reagan narrowly wins re-election against Senator Walter Mondale (I'm guessing this is narrow due to a failing economy with Reagan being saved by the successful rescue of the hostages right before the election, still I find it hard to believe Mondale is the optimal candidate here.). John Lennon survives his attempted assassination.

-1981: John Paul the Second is assassinated. President Sadat survives assassination. Prince Charles and Camilla are married. Shuttle makes maiden flight, first Lunar Shuttle flight slated for '82.

I doubt that Skylab ever needed to be saved in this timeline. It must have been regularly serviced by Apollo missions.

I think I heard about Apollo 37 during the episode, to give an idea of the completely different Apollo context.

Not just visuals. They named quite a few Space Shuttle Orbiters. Columbia is orbiting the moon ready to bring home the latest Jamestown crew. Kon-Tiki is the one docked at Skylab, there are also Orbiters named Victoria and Constitution in addition to Atlantis "in OMDP at Palmdale" and Enterprise, Endeavour and Discovery at Vandenberg. They also mention an Orbiter having a turbopump problem that will delay launch from Pad 39C for about a week, but pausing and replaying numerous times I can't tell what the secretary says is the name of that Orbiter. Maybe Eagle?

And this is set in 1983, remember.

I might need to rewatch the episode again, but did anyone catch which orbiter was docked to Skylab? That was the cool visual I was referring to.

Beagle, after HMS Beagle, the ship that carried Charles Darwin around the World.

I guess I blinked and missed it. :D The “shuttle huggers will love this” made me expect shuttles left right and center. ;)

It seems For All Mankind is alternative history in lots of ways ...

In the latest @forallmankind_ we see Gordo showing his spaceship skills with a score of over 200,000 on Asteroids.
However Asteroids only displayed 5 digits in the score before rolling over.
(Alt-history Atari clearly made a slightly different game)

It's too bad they mispronounced his name. Don't they do any research on Dutch names? It's pronounced "voo-bo." the W has a V sound.

I’d resisted watching this show because of the last 20 minutes of the BSG finale. I’m not much for deus ex machina.

But I watched it for the rocket porn, and dutifully went back yesterday to see Sea Dragon. No Sea Dragon yet, but there were astronauts coming back from the Moon on a Shuttle. I’ll have to go back and look again, given that I didn’t catch that there was a Skylab in lunar orbit.

LAM to station, Shuttle  as LRV? It did look as if the Shuttle they were using didn’t have payload bay doors. I’ve never thought to consider whether that would work. I don’t think that volume would hold much in the way of LOX/LH2.
