Dragon’s Solar Arrays Deployed

James Cawley Posted on May 4, 2019

Dragon’s solar arrays are unfurled and the spacecraft will begin a carefully choreographed series of thruster firings to reach the International Space Station two days later, Monday, May 6. Dragon will deliver about 5,500 pounds of cargo to the International Space Station.

Visit www.nasa.gov/live for live coverage of the rendezvous and capture on Monday, May 6, starting at 5:30 a.m. Capture is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., while Dragon installation to the nadir port of the Harmony module of the station will occur at approximately 9 a.m.

Kenny (NASA):

Grapple is Monday at 0800 EDT (1200 UTC).  About 1.5 hours later to berth to Node-2 nadir.  Hatch open on Monday afternoon (crew time).

3 June is new unberth/come home date.  Progress undock around that time too.  Will talk to Russian colleagues about that and the planned Russian EVA around that time.

Hans (SpaceX):

Hans ran outside to watch it.  First time he's done that.

6th flight-proven Dragon flight.  Orbit is "right on the money."  GNC door open soon to continue way to Station.

Question about the MBSU on Station.

Kenny: 4 on Station. 2 have been swapped out to date. Unit was replaced 8-9 hours ahead of timeline.  There are more MBSU spares on Station.

Question about the scrub last night.

Power issue on drone ship.  Redundant power was down, too.  Where close enough to fix both and go back out.  Case by case decision on whether to scrub launch is drone ship out of commission.

Kenny: MBSUs are 2x2 ft-ish.  Can bring inside and repair or bring is back to Earth on a Dragon.  Would use JAXA airlock to get it in and out of Station.  Believes this one that just failed has been brought inside before for repair.

Hans: Helium leak on ground side last night.  Didn't get to the point last night to determine if that would have a been a scrub situation (not enough Helium onboard).  Helium leak was not a reason for the scrub but was fixed after the scrub.

Kenny says this could be the first booster that's reused twice (3 flights total) for NASA missions.

1. CRS-17
2. CRS-18
3. CRS-19

To clarify... NASA is saying that this booster would be used on three flights for them.  That's a first.

Kenny confirming that the notional plan is to use this Falcon 9 booster for CRS-18 and then again for CRS-19 if it's available when CRS-19 flies.

Sorry guys, just a 4K Sony, and tripod. Our tracker Ed Geiger is still laid up. The landing was too far from us to film thru moisture. The best part is the separation. Thanks for Watching!

It's Tony De La Rosa, ...I don't create this stuff, I just report it.
