Protective masks.

I have heard they use oxygen masks instead of dust masks and googles on the very remote chance of a freon leak from the dragon cooling system. Freon is not really toxic as I understand, but is considered unhealthy in a similar way to many other solvents/refrigerants.

Freon is generally considered to be a fluorocarbon of relatively low toxicity; significantly detrimental effects may occur upon over exposure.

The crew perform Air Sampling as part of initial ingress operations and they inspect the interior of the spacecraft for any damage or FOD ("Foreign Object Debris").

Draeger Accuro air testing hand pump. I have used this device in my job as a U.S. Navy Damage Controlman for air testing in a post-fire environment. Changing the glass tube allows you to test for a wide variety of gasses. Both ends of the glass tube are nipped off and the hand pump pulls the atmosphere through the tube. The contents of the tube turn colors to indicate the presence of gasses.

Ground controllers now turning on the fans to mix the air between the two spacecrafts and to allow the air inside the spacecraft to pass through the filtration system of ISS in order to make sure no foreign objects or debris could harm the crew members during activities inside VV.

SpaceX Crew Dragon Hatch Open

Mark Garcia Posted on March 3, 2019

Aboard the space station, NASA astronaut Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, and Russian cosmonaut and Expedition 58 commander Oleg Kononenko opened the hatch between the Crew Dragon and the orbital laboratory at 8:07 a.m. EST.

The crew members opened the hatch to Crew Dragon following standard leak checks and pressurization since the spacecraft completed its hard dock to the station at 6:02 a.m., the first autonomous docking of any U.S. spacecraft to the International Space Station.

In addition to carrying Ripley, an anthropomorphic test device outfitted with sensors to provide data about potential effects on future astronauts who will travel in the Crew Dragon. NASA also sent more than 400 pounds of crew supplies and equipment to the space station, including bulk overwrap bags containing more than 1,000 food and drink packages for the crew.

For operational missions, Crew Dragon will be able to launch as many as four crew members and carry more than 220 pounds of cargo, enabling the expansion of the inhabitants of the space station, increasing the time dedicated to research in the unique microgravity environment, and returning more science back to Earth.

The Expedition 58 crew members will host a welcoming ceremony for the Crew Dragon that will air on NASA Television and the agency’s website beginning at 10:45 a.m.

WAAAAY back in the day 26/27 years ago now (!), my ECLSS team at Boeing was responsible to researching the available methods to manually sampling and testing the air for contaminants in places like the vestibules where the Sample Delivler Subsystem lines (also my group’s responsibility) couldn’t reach or when the Trace Contaminant Monitor assembly in the ECLSS rack wasn’t functional. It was considered a low-importance task (the Space Station project had much larger hurdles at the time!), so our team was nearly all junior engineers like me, 2 - 4 years out of school and eager to take on an interesting life support system design challenge. We ended up selecting the Draeger system as the best (by far) of several possibilities.

So to all the ISS crews who’ve used what we spec’d, you’re welcome. :)

EDIT: Just realized this was in the Updates thread, not Discussion. Sorry! Mods, please feel free to move.
