LEGO - 1980s Classic Space Sets
« on: 02/19/2019 06:28 pm »
I was 7 years old in 1983 when the Galactic Commander set came out and I was fully hooked by the whole line of Classic Space LEGO sets.  I kept all the pieces but the box and instructions are long gone.  Now that my son is old enough I wanted to rebuild it.  Fortunately the internet has all the instructions.  So the Galactic Commander flies again for a new generation!

If you have pictures of your favorite Classic Space Lego sets, please post them.

The fantastic thing about LEGO is that it is perfectly indestructible and backwards compatible. We have also passed down LEGO through the generations in our family. Such a unique feature in our modern use-and-throw-away world...

Last year I dug up my old Legos from when I was a kid (30+ years ago). The first few things I rebuilt were some of the smaller Classic Space Lego sets. See images below.
And yes, those are parts of a 25+ years old Revell 1/96 Saturn V in the background.

The fantastic thing about LEGO is that it is perfectly indestructible.

Not completely indestructible.  Through careful scientific analysis, I am convinced that every time a LEGO spaceship crashes and breaks, one piece chosen at random (but sure to be one you can't easily replace) is teleported into a parallel dimension.

Out of curiosity, do the colors look faded?

I have some very old CA elements and they've held their color better than ABS. My ABS elements from that era are primarily white, red and blue and they all have changed. Gotten yellower. That affects the white and blue differently than the red, as the red can tolerate some yellowing without looking quite so off.

I've got ABS elements from the early 1970's and all of the 1980's. Particularly white parts show everything from being still perfectly white (parts from 1973 and 1976) to quite yellow (1974, 1981 thru 1986). There doesn't seem to any consistency to the level of yellowing.

Just wanted to throw this out.  As my son and I have been rebuilding two large bases, I'm missing parts, and this site has everything I need.  Most parts are dirt cheap.

https://www.brickowl.com/
See also https://www.bricklink.com which has been around a lot longer, has many more sellers and many more parts. However, the UI isn't as good as brickowl. Some sellers keep their inventory in both places. but that's a bit hard since the sites don't officially interoperate.

(disclaimer: I sell on bricklink... I even pimp my store on FB during the monthly pimping day. I looked at Brickowl but get better sales where there are more buyers and sellers )
